As we stand on the brink of a design revolution fueled by AI, the landscape of architecture is evolving beyond conventional boundaries. AI-driven parametric design offers architects the ability to craft spaces that are not just functional, but also expressive and sustainable. Failure to adapt to this new paradigm leaves the future at risk. The choice is clear: embrace innovation, harness creativity, and put human experience at the forefront of design, or risk fading into obscurity.

Did you know a staggering 80% of a product's environmental impact is influenced by decisions made at the design stage? 🌍 In our latest article from the ‘Designing a Better Tomorrow’ series, Creative Strategist Rachel Edmonds shares how she's tackling sustainability fatigue by championing purposeful design. She asks: What if we reimagine our approach to sustainability right from the inception of a project? Looking ahead, the article underscores the pivotal role of design, where intentions forge tangible realities; with examples from the likes of Haptic Architects & Ramboll, Geoship and Delve by Sidewalk Labs (Part of Google). By embracing a holistic approach to design—grounded in adaptability, durability, and forward-thinking AI innovations—we can sculpt a tomorrow that prioritizes sustainability, fosters innovation, and ensures collective prosperity. For the past 20 years, I have enjoyed using the Shearing Layers of Change framework, a powerful concept that inspired Stewart Brand's well-known Pace Layering framework. It's been an invaluable tool in my arsenal for understanding how different aspects of society and technology evolve at varying speeds. Now, back in March, I had the pleasure of giving a talk about this concept and its implications for innovation and adaptability. I can't emphasize enough how much value I've found in applying this framework over the past two decades. It's helped me navigate complex challenges, identify opportunities for transformation, and foster meaningful conversations across industries. Now with Perplexity.ai’s Pages feature it is easy to share this kind of knowledge with others. The platform's ability to generate focused, informative pages is a game-changer for sparking discussions and spreading ideas! I'm curious to hear your experiences: How have you seen the Shearing Layers of Change play out in your own work? What insights have you gained from applying this lens? https://lnkd.in/g4hbugSa #PaceLayering #ShearingLayers #InnovationFrameworks #PerplexityAI

I think the million dollar question at this point is not whether we can use AI to enable rapid-prototyping in our design process, but whether or not designers with decades of experience working a certain way will be willing to adopt. Enabling change in behavior is the most difficult part of leading innovation. Thanks Susan Bender, M.S. & Jennie Morton for making this article happen.
