I have to tell you the story of how I came to know Goddess Matula through my writing friend Genius Turner As a writer on Medium - one of my greatest pleasures is connecting with unique folks who have a hot take fueled by kindness and the #PartnershipParadigm. That’s how I came to connect with Genius. He’s a talented writer and intuitive manifester - making the most of a challenging origin to rise up and spread the parsed out truth of The Genius Mindset: His specialty? Cutting through the BS of the modern world with an intersectional scalpel, and a style all his own. He’s also a popular writer on Quora and a psycho-spiritual weaver who doesn’t pull any punches. He’s also very real. Goddess Matula is his talent manager. And lest you be distracted by her physical beauty and his too-good-to-be-true name, let me tell you. These folks are as magical as they appear on first glimpse. Who am I? A hippie earthy 48 year old intellectual with poetic tendencies. And yet, the energetic support I get from these folks is 100% real. So when Goddess talks, I listen. I guarantee she’s more than a pretty face. When Genius writes, I read it. The truth he spits goes deep into the real. And that’s where we meet. In the real. After all the BS of the world today, is that not what you’re craving? I sure am. So take note when Goddess speaks. 🎄 The True Spirit of Christmas: Giving, Caring, and Sharing 🎄 Just because someone doesn’t have a home doesn’t mean they aren’t someone’s parent, child, or friend.✨ Yesterday, I was reminded of the magic of Christmas from my own childhood. Like many of you, I grew up watching Kevin Home Alone 2: Kevin lost in New York. Do you remember the kind-hearted pigeon lady in Central Park? She helped Kevin when he needed it most, and what did he do? He shared his Christmas joy with her—a simple act of kindness that brought tears to her eyes. It’s a powerful reminder: the world around us is our world. It’s our responsibility to care, to notice, and to act. Some people don’t have a family, a home, or friends. But they’re still human—just like you and me—and they deserve love and respect. That’s why I’m so proud that I had the chance to join, with 12 partners from UPS an amazing community involvement to support the #WeihnachtenZuhause initiative led by Daniel-John Riedl 🦋 , founder of #TUES. Together, we created over 170 heartfelt postcards to bring warmth and hope to those experiencing homelessness this season.🙏 Let’s be the change we want to see. Homelessness during Christmas casts a dark shadow over what is typically a season of warmth, joy, and togetherness. While many of us gather with family and friends, surrounded by festive meals and gifts, those without stable housing are faced with cold, hunger, and isolation. The harsh winter months are particularly unforgiving for those living on the streets, as shelters become overcrowded and essential resources are stretched thin. For many, Christmas only serves to highlight the stark contrast between their reality and the celebrations around them, making feelings of loneliness, despair, and invisibility even more acute. Yet, this season also offers an opportunity for compassion. Small acts of kindness can make a significant difference. While no one gesture can solve the complex issue of homelessness, collective efforts can provide much-needed relief and remind those struggling that they are seen and valued. Behind the smile... I as recently told I look sad even when I’m smiling. The truth is, I'm not sad, but I am hurt. Every day, I hurt for this broken world we're living in and how I just want so badly to help everyone I can. I hurt for the children in foster care, for the homeless, and for the countless broken people. Last summer, I met an incredible girl at a foster care camp. She was smart, funny, and had this amazing smile. But the thing is, she rarely smiled. She had been complaining about her mouth hurting. When I asked her why her mouth hurt, she didn’t know at first. Eventually, we realized it was from smiling so much! It was a heartbreaking moment, a stark reminder of the challenges these kids face. It’s stories like hers that keep me going. I believe in the power of small acts of kindness. Every day, I strive to make a difference, no matter how small. Even the smallest gesture can have a profound impact. They see a fellow human being in need and feel a strong urge to help. This innate empathy can be heartwarming to witness. They might ask questions about the person's situation, express concern, or even offer to share their belongings. Children at this age often have a strong sense of fairness and justice, and the sight of someone without a home can challenge their understanding of the world. However, other children may react with fear or confusion. The unfamiliar and often unsettling appearance of a homeless person can be overwhelming for young minds. They may withdraw, avoiding eye contact or asking questions that reveal their lack of understanding. This response is not a reflection of their character but rather a product of their limited life experiences. Ultimately, a child's response to homelessness is shaped by their environment and the guidance they receive. By fostering empathy and compassion from a young age, parents and caregivers can cultivate a generation of caring individuals. Children can be taught about the causes of homelessness, the challenges faced by those experiencing it, and how they can make a difference. For many individuals experiencing homelessness, this season can be particularly difficult, marked by feelings of isolation and longing for familial support. As a counselor working with the homeless, I encourage families to reach out to their loved ones who may be struggling during this time. If you know of a family member who is homeless, consider giving them a call to check in and reconnect. If you’ve lost touch or aren’t sure how to reach them, try reaching out to shelters, community organizations, or mutual contacts. Even a small effort to find them and let them know they are valued can mean the world to someone who feels forgotten. Many individuals experiencing homelessness are not just looking for material support but are deeply yearning for love, acceptance, and connection with their family. A simple conversation or acknowledgment can offer hope and remind them they are not alone. Question: What is Christmas like for people who are experiencing homelessness? Answer: On one hand, Christmas is just like any other day for someone who’s homeless. On the other hand, it’s a reminder of all they don’t have. Almost everything connected with Christmas is about family and gifts. Christmas will remind someone on the streets of the family they aren’t connected with, the friends they miss, and the life that they’ve lost. This can be a painful time. Did you know that many people who die of hypothermia in survival situations die shortly before help finds them. It’s like if they could only hold on a little longer. The 2 degree temperature outside reminded me of those humbling days I talk about in my memoir about overcoming youth homelessness and finding something to believe in, When I woke up this morning my was grateful. Grateful to not be outside on a day like this. I remember far too many days like this as a youth sleeping in my car. Stories that I share in my upcoming memoir. Many don’t know it but there is a trick to surviving in days like this. Fires and warm sleeping bags help. Shelters and couches are warmer than parking lots. Some tricks are about how long to let the car run so you don’t run out of gas, freeze or draw attention of someone driving by seeing a car running in an empty parking lot. Those tricks are of the trade of suriving a cold night outside but not what I am talking about today. The trick of today is to not die of shame. That’s right. Shame. Something every wilderness survival expert knows, those that give up, those that panic, those that feel shame, die. They give up hope. They stop looking for fire wood and sit and die, waiting to be found, In the survival situation of life, homelessness, we cannot let others die of shame. We cannot let those that fall through the cracks fall without a hand up to safety. Hope, the idea that life will get better because of action is powerful.
