As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s a time to reflect on gratitude, family, and connection. For many individuals experiencing homelessness, this season can be particularly difficult, marked by feelings of isolation and longing for familial support. As a counselor working with the homeless, I encourage families to reach out to their loved ones who may be struggling during this time. If you know of a family member who is homeless, consider giving them a call to check in and reconnect. If you’ve lost touch or aren’t sure how to reach them, try reaching out to shelters, community organizations, or mutual contacts. Even a small effort to find them and let them know they are valued can mean the world to someone who feels forgotten. Many individuals experiencing homelessness are not just looking for material support but are deeply yearning for love, acceptance, and connection with their family. A simple conversation or acknowledgment can offer hope and remind them they are not alone. Let this Thanksgiving be an opportunity to rebuild bridges, show compassion, and remind your loved ones that they are cared for and not forgotten.#mental #letsconnect #thanksgiving #mentalhealth

🏠💖 **Extending a Helping Hand to Our Homeless Neighbors** 💫🤝 ♥️🌈🌟 As the cold winds of winter blow and the holiday season approaches, let's take a moment to remember our homeless neighbors who are facing even greater challenges during this time. While many of us are cozy in our homes, there are countless individuals sleeping rough on the streets, struggling to find warmth, shelter, and sustenance. 🌈🌟 But amidst the hardships, there is hope – hope that each one of us can make a difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness. It doesn't take grand gestures or deep pockets to lend a helping hand; sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness can have the biggest impact. 🌈♥️🌟 Together, let's create a community where everyone has a place to call home and no one is left out in the cold. Let's be the light in someone's darkness and the warmth in their coldest nights. For people on the streets AKA rough sleepers, homelessness can be extremely isolating, which quickly creates a feeling of exclusion from society. This is something to bear in mind during World Homeless Week, a time when small gestures can create big change. Don't know where to start? A simple encounter in your town centre can stir feelings of guilt and helplessness, but there’s so much we can do to make a difference. If you see someone experiencing homelessness, consider taking a moment to connect. A simple “How are you?” can break down barriers and help combat the feelings of exclusion and dehumanisation that many face. Approach with kindness and without judgment, and listen to what kind of help they might need. Instead of giving cash, think about offering warm drinks or clothing during the colder months, and essentials like water, sunscreen, or hats in the summer. Small items, such as books, mini shampoo and shower gel, packs of tissues, or even torches, can also bring comfort and dignity. If you’re concerned about someone’s wellbeing, please reach out to local services. A great resource is Streetlink [www.thestreetlink.org.uk] which connects individuals experiencing homelessness with timely support. Let’s empower ourselves and others to take action, because every small gesture counts. 💖 For more practical advice, check out our guide - https://lnkd.in/eSxC_C4n #WorldHomelessWeek #EndHomelessness #Homelessness #HowToHelpHomelessPeople

What’s your first thought when you see someone living on the streets? 𝘢) 𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘮𝘺 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘥 𝘦𝘺𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘵; 𝘣) ‘𝘚𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺, 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯'𝘵 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦’; 𝘤) 𝘈𝘤𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘴𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘦. Today, on World Homeless Day, here are a few reflections I've learned through engaging with individuals experiencing homelessness on the streets (spoiler – it’s not just about giving money): 𝟭. 𝗔 𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. Sometimes, just being present, offering a smile or a kind word, reminds someone that they are seen and valued. 𝟮. 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿. Homelessness is a complex issue. Individuals facing homelessness often struggle to access basic rights and opportunities essential for a dignified life. 𝟯. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆. Illness, job loss, family breakdowns, or even sudden economic changes can push someone into homelessness. This World Homeless Day, maybe the question should be: 𝘐𝘧 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘯𝘰 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦, 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥? #WorldHomelessDay #Dignity

💖 Love, Resilience, and Homelessness: A Story of Strength in Later Years 🌟 When we think of homelessness, we often picture younger individuals or families. But what about older couples—those who’ve spent decades together—facing homelessness in their golden years? 👵👴 Take Robert and Eleanor’s story, for example. Married for 42 years and in their late 60s, they never imagined they’d lose their home. But life took an unexpected turn when medical bills for Eleanor’s Alzheimer’s care drained their retirement savings. With no safety net and limited support from their adult children, they found themselves living in a shelter. 🏠💔 The challenges were immense: - Loss of Privacy: After decades of having their own space, adapting to communal living was emotionally devastating. 😔 - Health Struggles: Managing Eleanor’s medical needs in a shelter environment was overwhelming. 🩺 - Relationship Strain: The stress of homelessness tested even their decades-long bond. 💔 But amidst the chaos, there was hope! 🌈 A senior-focused support program connected them to affordable housing, medical resources, and counseling services. Over time, they rebuilt their lives—finding stability while preserving the love that had carried them through so many years. 💪❤️ 💡 The Lesson? Homelessness doesn’t discriminate by age or circumstance. For older couples like Robert and Eleanor, it’s not just about finding shelter—it’s about preserving dignity, health, and the relationships that give life meaning. ✨ What Can We Do? - Advocate for shelters that cater to the unique needs of older adults, including privacy-friendly spaces and medical support. 🛏️🩺 - Push for affordable housing solutions that allow seniors to age with dignity. 🏡 - Promote access to counseling services that help couples navigate the emotional toll of homelessness together. 🤝 Let’s raise awareness for those navigating love and life on the streets—at any age! Together, we can create a community that supports not just individuals but also their relationships and dreams. 🌍💞 #SeniorHomelessness #Relationships #AgingWithDignity #AffordableHousing #LoveInAdversity #HealthEquity #SDOH #HomelessnessResponse #HealthyPeople2030 🙏🏾♥️👨🏾💼❤️🏠👨🏾🏫👨🏾💼🫶🏾🌎

When a family member is experiencing homelessness, it can deeply impact the entire family, both emotionally and practically. Families often feel a mix of worry, helplessness, and guilt as they navigate how to best support their loved one while balancing their own lives. The constant concern for their safety, health, and well-being can take a significant emotional toll. Homelessness can also strain relationships. Family members may experience tension, frustration, or even misunderstandings about the best ways to help. Some may face financial stress from trying to provide additional support, while others feel a profound sense of loss, as homelessness creates physical and emotional distance. The stigma of homelessness can add to these challenges, making it harder for families to seek help or talk about their struggles openly. Ultimately, the impact of homelessness ripples through the entire family, highlighting the importance of a strong support system, open communication, and community resources that can offer help to both the individual and their loved ones. Homelessness doesn’t just affect one person, it affects the whole family. Together, communities must work toward solutions that keep families connected and supported.

Many people know, I recently joined the team at Central Iowa Shelter Services. Though I’ve worked with organizations serving those experiencing homelessness and have personal connections to this issue, reading “When We Walk By” by Kevin F. Adler has deepened my understanding and empathy even further. Adler masterfully illustrates the stories of individuals often overlooked, highlighting their resilience and humanity. This book reminds us that every person we encounter has a unique story and deserves our empathy and respect. It’s a powerful call to see beyond our assumptions and judgments, to extend compassion and dignity to everyone we meet. Here are my five key takeaways from the book: 1.Humanizing Homelessness: Every individual experiencing homelessness has a unique story and deserves to be seen and treated with dignity. 2.The Power of Connection: Small acts of kindness and connection can have a profound impact on someone’s life. 3.Challenging Assumptions: It’s crucial to challenge our preconceived notions and judgments about homelessness. 4.Community Strength: A strong, empathetic community can provide the support and resources needed to help individuals rebuild their lives. 5.Advocacy and Action: We all have a role to play in advocating for systemic changes and providing direct support to those in need. Through these pages, I’ve learned the importance of understanding diverse perspectives and the incredible impact of kindness. If you’re looking for a read that will challenge your worldview and inspire you to make a difference, I highly recommend picking up this book. It’s a beautiful testament to the strength of community and the transformative power of simply seeing and acknowledging each other as human beings. If anyone is interested in learning more about those experiencing homelessness in our community, feel free to DM me. #Empathy #Community #WhenWeWalkBy #KevinFAdler #MustRead #homelessness #centraliowa

Welcome to another "Myth-Busting Homelessness," where we'll be sharing a weekly myth-buster to help deepen understanding of the complexities surrounding homelessness. Each week, we'll tackle common misconceptions, uncover the often-overlooked truths, and highlight the real challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness. This week, we're focusing on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)—traumatic events that occur during childhood, such as neglect, abuse, or family instability. These experiences can have a lasting impact, significantly increasing the risk of homelessness later in life. ACEs often disrupt emotional development, hinder educational opportunities, and make it more difficult to establish stable housing in adulthood. Understanding the roots of homelessness is a crucial step toward breaking the cycle and creating lasting solutions. Stay tuned for more myth busters in the weeks ahead!

Life's journey can take unexpected turns, leaving a lasting impression, as seen in the experience of homelessness. The reality is that life can change in an instant, from having a roof over your head to being without shelter, serving as a stark reminder of the world we live in today. Experiencing homelessness is a tremendous challenge, and it's something one would never wish upon themselves. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the global population becomes homeless every single second, highlighting the widespread nature of this issue. It's an incredibly difficult situation, and it's something that no one should have to endure. It's important to appreciate the blessings in our lives and be grateful for what we have, as we never know what unexpected challenges may arise. It's important to recognize that homelessness can affect anyone, regardless of their perceived distance from it. As a person experiencing homelessness and currently rough sleeping, I have encountered individuals of all age groups who are dealing with the same issue. Homelessness does not discriminate based on age, as I have come across teenagers, adults of various ages, and even elderly individuals in their 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and early 90s. This may be surprising to some, but it reflects the harsh reality of our 21st-century society. I share this information to raise awareness, educate, and remind others of these important facts. Thank you for listening, and may you be blessed. P.s. Support my homeless campaign. Use hashtags @realitycheck4uall at youtube com #realityfacts4u at x com

November is National Homeless Awareness Month, and at House of Refuge, we want to shed light on the realities of homelessness here in Arizona and share how we’re tackling this issue head-on. For many families, homelessness is the result of sudden, overwhelming circumstances—job loss, domestic violence, or a major health crisis. At House of Refuge, we understand that homelessness isn’t just about lacking shelter; it’s about the profound impact on families’ lives and futures. That’s why we provide more than a temporary home. We offer transitional housing with comprehensive wrap-around services to get to root causes of homelessness for each individual family- including employment support, financial education, counseling, and resources for children and teens. Our programs are designed to empower each family on their path to self-sufficiency and long-term stability. This month, we invite you to join us in raising awareness and supporting families who are working hard to overcome homelessness. Together, we can build a brighter, more hopeful future for every family in Arizona. https://lnkd.in/gDRvXJnM #fromhomelesstohopeful #nationalhomelessawarenessmonth
