Question: What is Christmas like for people who are experiencing homelessness? Answer: On one hand, Christmas is just like any other day for someone who’s homeless. On the other hand, it’s a reminder of all they don’t have. Almost everything connected with Christmas is about family and gifts. Christmas will remind someone on the streets of the family they aren’t connected with, the friends they miss, and the life that they’ve lost. This can be a painful time. But pain often propels someone to make a life change. That’s what we pray for. If you have questions for Rolf, send them to newsletter@sbrm.org

🏠💖 **Extending a Helping Hand to Our Homeless Neighbors** 💫🤝 ♥️🌈🌟 As the cold winds of winter blow and the holiday season approaches, let's take a moment to remember our homeless neighbors who are facing even greater challenges during this time. While many of us are cozy in our homes, there are countless individuals sleeping rough on the streets, struggling to find warmth, shelter, and sustenance. 🌈🌟 But amidst the hardships, there is hope – hope that each one of us can make a difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness. It doesn't take grand gestures or deep pockets to lend a helping hand; sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness can have the biggest impact. 🌈♥️🌟 Together, let's create a community where everyone has a place to call home and no one is left out in the cold. Let's be the light in someone's darkness and the warmth in their coldest nights. After all, in a world where kindness is free, let's be generous with it. 🌟🤝 #HelpingHomeless #CompassionInAction #CommunitySupport #KindnessMatters #NoOneLeftBehind

Homelessness during Christmas casts a dark shadow over what is typically a season of warmth, joy, and togetherness. While many of us gather with family and friends, surrounded by festive meals and gifts, those without stable housing are faced with cold, hunger, and isolation. The harsh winter months are particularly unforgiving for those living on the streets, as shelters become overcrowded and essential resources are stretched thin. For many, Christmas only serves to highlight the stark contrast between their reality and the celebrations around them, making feelings of loneliness, despair, and invisibility even more acute. Yet, this season also offers an opportunity for compassion. Small acts of kindness can make a significant difference. While no one gesture can solve the complex issue of homelessness, collective efforts can provide much-needed relief and remind those struggling that they are seen and valued. In this season of giving, we can each play a part in bringing a bit of light into someone’s life, offering not just material assistance, but a sense of dignity and hope. #CrisisAtChristmas #homelessness #homelessnessawareness

Recently, I came across a story about a group of well-to-do individuals spending a night sleeping outside to "raise awareness" about homelessness. While the intentions may have been good, it’s crucial to recognize the stark difference between an organized "adventure" and the harsh, unrelenting reality faced by homeless children and families every single night. For many, homelessness is not a choice, a moment of reflection, or a controlled experience. It’s the absence of safety, stability, and dignity. A night outdoors for a fundraiser is vastly different from enduring countless nights of uncertainty, hunger, and vulnerability without the guarantee of warmth, food, or security. Instead of simulating the experience, let’s amplify the voices of those who live it. Raising awareness is essential, but it must be paired with humility, action, and a recognition of privilege. Let’s ensure our efforts honor the dignity of those we aim to help, without trivializing their lived experiences. #Homelessness #SocialImpact #EmpathyInAction

It's the run up to #WorldHomelessDay, and we’ve been thinking about the experiences of young people who access our emergency youth shelter, the Z House. Our staff and volunteer teams work in a trauma informed way, because the trauma of experiencing homelessness is often preceded by other experiences that create disadvantage for young people. We’re here to address the disadvantages, barriers, and challenges that they face. It’s not just about homelessness – it’s about the whole person. If this approach sits with you, why not find out about volunteering for Z House, and being part of the lasting change that we’re creating with young people as they move beyond homelessness. https://brs.tl/WHD

As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s a time to reflect on gratitude, family, and connection. For many individuals experiencing homelessness, this season can be particularly difficult, marked by feelings of isolation and longing for familial support. As a counselor working with the homeless, I encourage families to reach out to their loved ones who may be struggling during this time. If you know of a family member who is homeless, consider giving them a call to check in and reconnect. If you’ve lost touch or aren’t sure how to reach them, try reaching out to shelters, community organizations, or mutual contacts. Even a small effort to find them and let them know they are valued can mean the world to someone who feels forgotten. Many individuals experiencing homelessness are not just looking for material support but are deeply yearning for love, acceptance, and connection with their family. A simple conversation or acknowledgment can offer hope and remind them they are not alone. Let this Thanksgiving be an opportunity to rebuild bridges, show compassion, and remind your loved ones that they are cared for and not forgotten.#mental #letsconnect #thanksgiving #mentalhealth

Our charitable partner, KEY UNLOCKING FUTURES LIMITED supports thousands of people every year in Lancashire who are homeless or in crisis. As homelessness figures are increasing, Key's Managing Director Ursula Patten shares her support for the National Housing Federation's #Planforhousing and Centrepoint's #Planforthe136k campaigns: ‘’Homelessness will continue to increase until sufficient investment in housing is made available. I welcome the #PlanForHousing and the #Planforthe136k young people facing homelessness. We need purpose-built emergency accommodation for young people and more affordable and youth-appropriate housing as solutions to support people when they leave hospital, care, or the criminal justice system. "We need a long-term #PlanForHousing to fix the UK's housing crisis." National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day: A Time to Remember, A Time to Act Every year, on December 21st—the longest night of the year—we come together to remember those who have tragically lost their lives while experiencing homelessness. This day serves as a moment to reflect on their humanity and confront the ongoing inequities that allow such losses to continue. For those of us working in homelessness services or who have lived experience, this day is a moment to pause and hold space for grief that often gets pushed aside by the urgency of the work we do. Many of us know the pain of losing clients, friends, or loved ones to a crisis that should not exist. We carry the weight of faces, names, and stories that remind us of the humanity behind the numbers. This day isn’t just about mourning; it’s a call to action. It’s a reminder that every person we’ve lost had a story, a dream, and a future that deserved to be realized. Homelessness is more than a statistic—it’s a crisis that impacts real people, and we must do everything we can to ensure no one else suffers the same fate. Tonight, we light candles and speak names to remember those who shouldn’t have been lost. And tomorrow, we recommit to fighting for a world where housing is a basic human right for all.
