Compassion can motivate us to prevent and alleviate the suffering in the world. We are so honored to have the support of Dr. Kristin Neff who reminds us that self-compassion can help us tap into extending compassion to others. What does it mean to adopt trauma-informed approaches in international development? In South Africa, EDC is partnering with the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation and the Centre for Mental Wellness and Leadership through the USAID Inclusive Development and Equitable Assistance (IDEA) activity. This partnership will develop a Community of Practice and deliver trauma-informed capacity strengthening for implementing partners in South Africa, where trauma is a prevalent public health concern. The USAID Inclusive Development and Equitable Assistance (IDEA) activity, implemented by EDC, supports marginalized and underrepresented groups by advancing inclusion, equity, and local organizational capacity around the world. Through USAID, EDC and IDEA are thrilled to kickoff a new Activity on trauma-informed approaches in South Africa, in partnership with Centre for Mental Wellness and Leadership (CMWL) and Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR). On South Africa's National Day of Reconciliation, which focuses on "healing historical wounds and forging new futures," Nomfundo Mogapi, with CMWL, gave a powerful interview with Newzroom Afrika on the importance of trauma-informed work and addressing/healing the wounds of trauma. If you would like to learn more about this work and Activity, please reach out! #traumainformed #intergenerationaltrauma #mentalhealth #traumahealing #mentalhealthawareness #reconciliationday

Compassion goes beyond sympathy and empathy. To understand why it is important to connect with empathy but lead with compassion, here’s a link to an insightful post by Harvard Business Review https://lnkd.in/g-RDXJk2
Let us not underestimate how hard it is to be compassionate. Compassion is hard because it requires the inner disposition to go with others to places where they are weak, vulnerable, lonely, and broken. But this is not our spontaneous response to suffering. What we desire most is to do away with suffering by fleeing from it or finding a quick cure for it.” ― Henri J.M. Nouwen

As more folks are inspired to join collective liberation movements following the election, I want to uplift Prentis Hemphill's reminder to center healing in our work from their new book, What It Takes to Heal: https://lnkd.in/gCbsRHEQ "When we focus on external change without tending to internal transformation, we act out the worst of ourselves in the places it matters most." - pg. 27 "Healing is the process, often lifelong, of restoring and reawakening the capacities for safety, belonging, and dignity on the other side of trauma." - pg. 40 "Healing ourselves is not the end of the line but brings us into relationship with others and allows us to do the work that brings healing to the wider world." - pg. 43 As someone in a white, male body, I have often felt a tension between prioritizing my internal transformation and engaging in external work that decenters whiteness and maleness. But reading Prentis' book has provided a timely reminder to let our healing be a portal to healing in our relationships and community, and to scaffold our movements with support for everyone's healing processes.

When asked if his glass was half full or half empty, the elderly sage replied, "Neither, the glass is full!" Pointing to the glass, he continued. "half water and half air. Consider that you can survive for about 3 days without water; only 4 to 6 minutes without air." Note: Switching your attention from lack to gratitude keeps you focused on blessings and resilient in challenging times. Question: How can you stay grateful regardless of outer circumstances? Resource: Can You See What Eye See? Envision a Better You and a Better World. Chapter 30 Page 269 Be Grateful. For more information and to order copies WWW.MChereSampson.com
