Thank you so much to my co-organizer Mike Shoss for streaming this event! 150 people packed OneEleven last night, and the energy was electric. The panel was incredible, so many diverse perspectives from internal talent acquisition leaders, external recruiters, start-up advisors, and two recently hired PMs, we had all angles on the job hunt. I got so much out of the session, here are some of my key take-aways and your TLDR on how to approach your job hunt right now: 1) Be intentional - think about the type of company you want to work at, whether it be size, stage, domain, business model, and understand why you want that. 2) Personalization gives you an edge - blast applying and not caring about the opportunity is a waste of time. Use your intentionality to pick the jobs you really want, and then put the extra effort in to telling the org why you are interested and how you would make an impact on their bottom line. Our panelist Caitlin Chua cold applied to her current role and included a case analysis that framed her whole interview process. 3) Don't be afraid to be your authentic self - tell your employer about yourself, and show your personal interests. If that somehow deters them from hiring you, then it wasn't a fit for you in the first place. Remember rejection is protection. 4) Networking isn't a means to an end, it's the whole journey- Building connections in your community can absolute help you get a job, but you shouldn't do it only to get a job. Make networking a journey for yourself and aim to build meaningful connections. They will help you in the long-run through professional opportunities, but also help you build your craft, make friends and create a richer, more fulfilling career. Thank you to our panelists Saeed K., Voula Vasilopoulos, Reece Fallon, @michaelhashizume, Caitlin Chua, @jasonmark for joining us! and as ever our amazing group of volunteers for helping pull the night together, Burcin Olcer Ozturk, Anahita P., Jade Pauk, Nik Astashinsky, Artem Trofimov, Curtis Savage, Maidah Mir!
This ProductTank Toronto evening will focus on what's happening in the job market from a market level, an industry level, as well as provide tangible ideas that make sure you're able to strategize and align to the skillsets that serve your job hunt. This evening is not solely for PMs, it's for those who manage, support, or collaborate with product and tech. We'll hear from hiring managers, start-up leaders, recruiters, and recent hires. Our panelists are going to provide a lightening talk on the skills that they feel are crucial to the interview process, and we will have plenty of time for a Q+A, with networking opportunities galore! We understand it's rough out there, because we've all been through it. We hope that this program will provide support and community to those on the search. Our panelists include; Saeed Khan; Start-up advisor and mentor, MaRS Discovery District Michael Hashizume; Principal Talent Acquisition Consultant, GuruLink Voula Vasilopoulos; Head of Employee Journeys, Interac Corp. Reece Fallon; Head of Talent Acquisition, Thoughtworks Canada Caitlin Chua; recently hired Product Manager at Create Music Group Jason Mark; recently hired senior Product Manager at Dash Hudson Thank you to Chris Greenfield and OneEleven for the space! #ProductManagement #PRODMGMT #Toronto #ProductTank #Product

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Hacker Ramp organized by Myntra, and it was an experience to remember! Although we faced challenges and were disqualified in Phase 1, the journey was invaluable. Here's what I took away from the experience: Learning & Growth: The competition pushed me to think outside the box and tackle complex problems. Every challenge was a new learning opportunity that enriched my skills and understanding of tech. Networking: I connected with passionate individuals and industry experts, exchanging ideas and insights that will undoubtedly benefit me in the future. Resilience: Facing setbacks is part of the journey. This experience taught me the importance of resilience and continuous improvement. A huge thank you to Myntra for organizing such a fantastic event and to everyone who participated. Looking forward to more opportunities to challenge myself and grow in the tech world! 🌟 hashtag #HackerRamp #Myntra #Hackathon #TechJourney #LearningExperience #GrowthMindset

27 Jan 2024. Support. Yesterday, my friend found out that the job they love so much is no more. There was no warning or notice that this was going to happen. They had completed their performance review just a month ago… exceeds expectations… on track for a promotion and a well-deserved pay rise. They've also just bought a new apartment so things were looking up. But just like that, the world as they knew came crashing down. When we spoke last evening, they were going through a flurry of emotions… shocked, anxiety, panic, worried, dread, anger, sadness, embarrassment, worthlessness (that their “exceeds expectations” work must not have been important or seen as valuable). So much of what they were feeling at that moment were internalised rather than circumstantial... that this had to do with their capability or lack of effort. That was obviously untrue but it can be terrifyingly so at a traumatic time like this. Instead of trying to set them right, I spent time listening to them… just listened. When they asked “do you know who might be looking for someone with my skills?”, I immediately connected them to 3 people i know. This morning, I heard they have secured 3 meetings with my contacts. They said this was an encouraging progress from the hopelessness they felt from the day before. This is the beauty of #LinkedIn… the ability for unconnected people to be connected and be acquainted through their professional experiences. My friend's story isn’t new. They join over 240k people who were #laidoff in the past 12 months, including a recent mass layoff by Lazada, one of Asia’s largest ecommerce, and more than 25k in just this month… from Discord, Twitch… and Salesforce + Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard & Xbox… the latter 2 were announced just yesterday. Having experienced losing a job before, I’m consciously aware of and immensely grateful for where I am in my career today. That’s why I know the importance of having good support and kindness during a challenged time like this. So if anyone who’s reading this post has been laid off, do reach out… I’m happy to help however I can… provide feedback on how to strengthen your CV, connect you to suitable contacts in my network, etc. I want you to know that you’re not alone during this disrupted time. #offeringhelp #support #linkedincommunity

🌟 Sharing My WhiteHat Jr Odyssey: A Tale of Resilience and Victory 🌟 Close your eyes and imagine stepping into the unknown, armed only with determination and a hunger for success. That was me in 2020, embarking on a journey with Whitehat Jr. Little did I know, it would become the adventure of a lifetime. From the humble beginnings of a Sales Manager to the pinnacle of leading a team of 80 as the Director of Sales, my journey has been a rollercoaster of challenges and triumphs. But through it all, one thing remained constant – the unwavering belief in the power of hard work and perseverance. 🚀 Highlights That Lit Up My Path: 🔹 Starting as a Sales Manager and swiftly climbing the ranks to become a Team Leader, I learned that no dream is too big to chase, no goal too daunting to conquer. 🔹 As the Director of Sales, I not only witnessed professional growth but also personal milestones. Buying my first car and securing a home in Mumbai stand as testaments to the incredible journey I've been on. 🔹 But beyond personal victories, it was the collective success of the team that truly ignited my spirit. Together, we redefined sales strategies, doubled conversion rates, and created a culture of excellence. Reflecting on this journey, I am reminded of the countless late nights, the moments of doubt, and the exhilarating highs. But above all, I am filled with gratitude – for the lessons learned, the challenges overcome, and the dreams realized. To everyone out there navigating their own journey, I say this: Embrace the challenges, cherish the victories, and never lose sight of the incredible potential within you. With grit, determination, and a dash of courage, the world is yours to conquer. When I started my part-time role at a product-based company, I was nervous. Here’s why: Throughout my career, I thrived in startup ( digitalux ) switching between projects, wearing multiple hats, and exploring different niches. I loved the variety. The idea of focusing on a single product or domain felt… constraining. What if I got stuck? What if I missed the thrill of rapid experimentation? But here’s what I’ve learned so far ( 2 Months ): Focusing deeply on one product doesn’t limit you it sharpens you. It’s in this role that I’ve discovered: The power of detail: You notice the smallest tweaks that make the biggest difference. The value of focus: You don’t just solve problems; you solve them better. The growth in depth: Instead of scratching the surface, you master the craft. Startups taught me how to be adaptable, and now I’m learning how to be precise. It’s a balance I didn’t expect but one I’m incredibly grateful for. For anyone hesitating to step out of their comfort zone: New challenges don’t erase your past experiences—they add to them. P.S. Repost this ♻️ to inspire someone else to embrace their next chapter!
