Hire a fresh-out college graduate as your next producer hire? This may look like an attractive option. There's plenty of them. You may be able to hire them on the cheap. New to sales + new to insurance + new to your firm = high new producer failure risk. Still OK to hire. Know that you're assuming a high failure risk. Proceed with caution. Insurance producer is a tough first sales job. #insurance #insuranceindustry #sales

It's application time. As a young lawyer, I didn't have many choices back then. And for me the choice was plain - join a big 4 Law Firm, work with the best and brightest, slog it out and gain the prestige of being on one of the smartest teams at one of the swankiest firms around. Long story short - I didn't become a good lawyer at that firm. Sure, I gained a lot of experience through working with some of the brightest minds, but I rarely got the opportunity to address the court, or run an entire file on my own. If I had known then what I know now, my choice of pupillage (what we used to call a training contract) may have been different. So if I may offer some unsolicited advice to young lawyers out there, consider a few things before you apply for a training contract with that firm: 1) What learning opportunities will you be getting, during and after your TC? Working with some of the brightest in the profession does not mean you will be learning. Yes, you will be exposed to many areas of the law that smaller firms may not be able to offer. But exposure does not equal learning. You won't learn much if all you're doing is researching some obscure point. You will learn more by being given the responsibility to handle significant pieces of litigation, like for example, drafting an entire affidavit or even written submissions, and later, arguing hearings. In large law firms you will be lucky if you are given such opportunities 1 or even 2 years down the road. In a smaller sized firm, you may get it on day one. Which brings me to my next point - 2) How much responsibility will you be given? In larger law firms with numerous trainees, you will be lucky to get the opportunity to take on responsibilities like drafting entire affidavits or submissions, or handling clients. In a smaller sized firm, you will get such opportunities far quicker because, frankly, a smaller firm lacks the human capital. A large firm may not want to take on the risk of giving you the work that will enable you to grow. What this means is that in a smaller firm, you will work closely with the lawyer/partner in charge of the file and get to see him/her in action, up close. You will learn by following. Which brings me to my last point - 3) Who's going to be your mentor? Working with the best and the brightest does not at all equate to being mentored by them. What will your interactions really be with the lawyer who is going to sign your training contract forms? Will you actually be following him/her to hearings or trial, or will you be stuck in some back room somewhere working only with their underlings? In biblical times there was an admonishment for disciples to be "covered in the dust of your rabbi" - to sit or walk so closely with him that you are covered in his dust of his feet. Here, you get to choose your rabbi. So, ask yourself before you sign on, will you truly be gaining the experience you want to be a good lawyer, or the experience you need?

In case we weren’t on your radar yet, we wanted to tell you that there are exciting things happening in the Insurance industry that could be perfect for you. Imagine if what you do in your job every day made a genuine difference to the lives of the community you live in. For example, increasing awareness of road safety, working with government to develop better policies around natural disaster management, or contributing to the build of more resilient homes. Insurance isn’t just about premiums and claims. It’s about risk management and educating customers on how to evaluate, plan for and manage their financial risks, that is – ‘building futures and protecting what matters’. It’s the perfect industry for a business student like yourself to put your education into practice. We have roles across Australia across several streams including Underwriting, Risk Management, Human Resources, Accounting and Technology (and more). Internship and graduate roles available, all paid and supported with training, plus you’ll be part of the growing Suncorp graduate community. Interns start 18 Nov, and grads start 28 Jan 2025. We know you’re busy, so we’ve kept our initial application process to one hour, and you’ll receive an automatic feedback report so you know how you went. Applications close Monday 26 August. Does your workplace support Apprenticeships? If so, you may want to add your thoughts to this survey: The proposed level 2 administration assistant standard has been designed as an entry level occupation across functions and departments within an organisation. It is anticipated that, if approved, it will be developed alongside the planned revision of the level 3 business administration standard to ensure clear and distinct differentiation between the two standards. If you would like to add your workplaces thoughts to this proposal - please fill the form in below. If you have questions please reach out to Lucy Hunte who is part of the Trailblazer Group leading this project. #apprenticeships #socialmobility #entrycareers
Not sure what is going on with LinkedIn and it’s algorithms but sharing this for one final time. We now have 850 responses to the Level 2 Administration Assistant Trailblazer Group survey but would really like to get to over 1000. Please can everyone in the sector, who is passionate about this missing rung on the ladder of opportunity complete the survey and encourage your networks to do so too? We have extended the deadline to Friday 27th September. #apprenticeships #socialmobility #entrycareers Lisa Shepherdson Sharon Blyfield OBE Jo Simovic David Pautsch https://lnkd.in/ePX6qsra

Repost! Repost! My name is Sandisiwe Mtsha, and I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in pursuing a Data Scientist role within the insurance domain, particularly focusing on credit risk. As a Master of Science candidate in Applied Statistics with a strong background in data analysis, I am eager to leverage my skills and passion for the insurance industry to contribute to your organization's success. Throughout my academic journey, I have consistently demonstrated a strong aptitude for mathematics and statistics. Graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in this field, I further honed my skills by pursuing a Master's degree. My current thesis delves into a critical area for the insurance industry: predicting claim timing and severity using motor insurance data. This research directly translates to understanding credit risk within the insurance landscape. By identifying the most effective models for predicting claim occurrences and severity through survival analysis, I am gaining valuable insights into risk factors that influence insurance decisions. This knowledge can be applied to optimize risk assessment and pricing strategies, leading to a more sustainable and competitive insurance environment. While my previous experience at Old Mutual Finance involved branch management and sales, it sparked my curiosity about the data driving sales performance. This fascination led me to pursue formal qualifications to explore the data side of insurance. In my recent internship at NTIYISO Consulting Group, I actively utilized my data analysis skills to improve consultant performance and client book health. I successfully cleaned and modeled data for accurate insights, facilitating data-driven decision-making through dashboards and reports. While I may be new to the data analyst field from a formal experience standpoint, my academic achievements and recent internship showcase my capabilities. I am a highly motivated individual with a strong work ethic and a passion for learning. I am confident that I can quickly adapt and contribute meaningfully to your company's data science initiatives. I am particularly drawn to the dynamic nature of the insurance industry and its potential for positive social impact. I believe my data analysis skills, combined with the insights gained through my thesis research on predicting claim timing and severity, would be a valuable asset to your team. My resume is readily available for your review and welcome the opportunity to discuss my qualifications further in an interview. Please kindly repost!
