📣We've officially released a new report: "Highlighting Housing Impacts from our Changing Environment!" 📣 🏡 Did you know that Gary and Indianapolis two cities with Indiana’s most diverse populations, have some of the worst air quality in the country, due to industrial plants and traffic pollution, especially in communities of color? 🛫 🌎 Learn more about the ways in which nearly 800,000 Hoosiers (and their housing!) are at risk of being negatively affected by climate change in our brand new report: https://lnkd.in/g8c4u24W

Studies show that lakes in the #GreatLakes region and around the world don’t freeze over as they did in past centuries, negatively impacting people, wildlife, and the environment as a whole. Check out this week's featured Insights article by Lester Graham, Reporter, The Environment Report, Michigan Public, discussing how climate change is reducing ice formation over the Great Lakes and inland lakes and the consequences this will bring to the region and beyond. Climate change is killing us. From record-breaking heat waves to catastrophic floods, changing weather patterns are devastating lives and livelihoods, especially in vulnerable communities that have contributed the least to climate change. At The Rockefeller Foundation, we’re working to build resilient health systems that protect communities - especially the most vulnerable – from the health impacts of climate change. Today is World Meteorological Day! As we celebrate, it's crucial to recognize the interconnectedness of weather, climate, and air quality. Clean air is essential for human health, environmental sustainability, and socioeconomic development. Yet, air pollution remains a significant global challenge, affecting millions of people worldwide and contributing to a range of health issues, environmental degradation, and climate change. Across the United States, air quality improvement has either greatly slowed down or reversed in recent years, mainly due to wildfires. This is a national phenomenon and not one we can regulate our way out of. In a recent issue of "Outdoor America," we look at what's driving the fires, and what the growing problem is doing to our health. https://lnkd.in/ed47EzA7

Fighting climate change, one coastal wetland at a time! University of North Florida's Dr. Scott Jones led a groundbreaking global study on restoring wetlands like salt marshes, mangroves, and seagrasses—proven to store carbon and cool our planet. 🌱 The study pinpoints where restoration efforts work best, providing actionable insights to boost climate solutions. The secret? Target degraded areas with strong community and governance backing, while overcoming challenges like rising sea levels and methane emissions! 🔗 Dive into the details—read the full study in Cambridge Prisms: Coastal Futures. https://lnkd.in/e8kTF3ss

A recent The Associated Press story paints a sobering picture of forest health in the Western U.S.: ➡️ Climate-driven impacts: 🔥 Larger, hotter wildfires are wiping out seed banks and creating the perfect conditions for more fires, droughts, and infestations. ➡️The reforestation gap: 🌲 Forests are burning much faster than we can restore them. The current gap of 3.8M+ acres is expected to triple by 2050. ➡️ Adaptation: As forest ecologist Matthew Hurteau says, we can’t rely on the old “plant-and-pray” approach. We need smarter strategies like careful site selection and replanting for a changing climate. At Mast, we’re working to restore resilient forests more capable of handling severe fires, drought, and other threats exacerbated by climate change and other factors.
