Just watched Steven Hill's Opening Plenary from Engage 2024 (on National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE)'s YouTube channel - glad to see this resource for those of us who were not able to attend). Really interesting watch for those in the REF and impact communities... take homes for me are: > more action-orientated research is needed to deliver change not just publications; > need to increase engagement and co-creation with society; > bringing together teams that are not just about researchers, but diverse expertise from across society used in an integrated way and without knowledge hierarchies within that; > an increased focus on people in the research system, the conditions to allow them to thrive. #researchimpact #impactliteracy #REF #theHiddenREF

🤝 What does collaboration look like in place-based initiatives? Our latest analysis highlights the importance of collaboration in driving successful place-based projects. While high engagement between community and voluntary sectors is common, we see less involvement from sectors like local government, education, and even local leaders like the Police. 💡 Key Insights: While community and voluntary sectors collaborate closely, organisations such as Education, Housing and the Police are involved less frequently. Notably, 70% of projects reported extensive community involvement, which is crucial for achieving genuine, lasting change. These complex social problems require cross-sector collaboration to truly transform communities. NatCen’s Centre for Deliberation ran a public dialogue commissioned by Campaign for Science and Engineering. The Centre explored attitudes towards public involvement in research and development (R&D).   The public dialogue shaped the ‘People’s Principles for Involvement in R&D’. The People’s Principles highlight the importance of increasing awareness of involvement in R&D through communicating the benefits for participants, researchers, and wider society. One of the highlights of working at the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) has been participating in the dialogue sessions with CaSE and NatCEN. These discussions were thought-provoking and reminded me that we are all human and we all want to have a say in decisions that impact us. Yet it is easy to think that some things are too complex to explain or that we do not have the time or resources to do so. As we face the many challenges of our time, we should consider how R&D comes across to people not involved in it. Whilst R&D plays a vital role in tackling these challenges, its success depends on considering real-life experiences and understanding and gaining approval from individuals across all parts of society. To do this we need to invest time in sharing knowledge, learning from one another, and enabling this to change priorities and set the direction of R&D. I have a lot of confidence in the People's Principles for Involvement in R&D and I am eager to see how researchers, academics and funders integrate them into their work. Why communities of practice are key to an organization’s knowledge management Knowledge powers much of today’s economy, and organizations need to be able to effectively spread ideas and expertise amongst their teams. That said, many organizations are structured in a way that can inadvertently keep like-minded professionals from fully connecting. It’s necessary to bridge these silos so that people with a shared passion or concern can start talking — AND making a difference. What’s particularly special about a community of practice is that participation is voluntary; people take part simply because they find it worthwhile. Whether the community is formal or informal, the glue is each participant’s ability to learn from others and advance a shared set of goals. It’s this voluntary, organic nature that makes a CoP so valuable for spreading ideas and know-how throughout an organization. Folks argue over words, but the truth is - without a healthy workplace culture, everyone suffers. Today I was reminded of the lived experience (my feelings, stories, personal and professional growth) of doing community-based, community-led research with resident leaders in Lawrence Heights and Neptune neighbourhood. This experience informed-and-formed-and-changed me so deeply... Much of what I offer in my advisory/capacity building/consulting roles today.
