Over the past decade, we’ve partnered with communities and leaders across the U.S. to create innovative, integrated systems of child development and well-being. As we celebrate our 10-year anniversary, we want to reflect on some of the key milestones that have shaped our journey: 2014: Our story begins in 2014, when we set out to transform systems that impact children’s lives. 2016: We launch By All Means, a community of practice supporting local communities in creating integrated, cross-sector systems for child well-being and education. 2017: Through our Leadership Institute, hosted at Harvard Business School, we convene national leaders from 10 field partners to explore how we can work collectively to address disparities in education and child development. 2021: With the launch of the Institute for Success Planning, we secure multi-year funding to help communities build personalized systems of support for every child. Since 2022, ISP has welcomed three cohorts of communities into its Community of Practice. 2022: Alongside William Julius Wilson Institute at Harlem Children's Zone, we host the now annual Summer Institute for Neighborhood Leaders, focusing on transforming neighborhoods through cradle-to-career place-based models, building up the leadership pipeline, and promoting collaboration across sectors. 2023: EdRedesign launches the By All Means Senior Fellowship, a visiting fellowship designed to engage senior leaders of place-based collaborations in learning and innovation. 2023: In a pivotal leadership transition, Rob Watson is appointed Executive Director; Tauheedah Jackson, Ed.M., the Director of the Institute for Success Planning, is appointed Deputy Director. 2024: Led by William Julius Wilson Institute at Harlem Children’s Zone, in partnership with EdRedesign and Chiefs for Change, The Place-Based Education Leaders Design Fellowship launches. A national coalition of superintendents from 19 school districts, the new fellowship provides resources for school systems to address whole child supports. 2024: Led by StriveTogether, in partnership with EdRedesign, the StriveTogether Policy Implementation Community of Practice supports states along their policy implementation journey. 2024:  We launch the Fellowship for Cradle-to-Career Partnership Leaders, the first of its kind to support place-based leaders across the U.S. in creating systems that help children thrive from cradle to career. Denisse Arias is appointed the inaugural Director. 2024: We join with StriveTogether to launch the Policy Implementation Community of Practice, with Opportunity Insights to launch the Upward Mobility Fellowship, and with data and evaluation leads from national intermediaries and exemplary place-based partnerships to launch a Data and Evaluation Working Group for our field. As we look back on our impact over the past decade, we’re filled with gratitude for the communities, funders, and partners who have joined us in this work!

Tauheedah Jackson, Ed.M. and Julie Allen from our leadership team attended #FlourishingNeighborhoods2024, an annual convening hosted at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on December 9, 2024. Participants had the opportunity to connect with like-minded leaders across sectors, share insights, and collaborate on strategies to create thriving communities and to address our most pressing problems, from inequality and loneliness to polarization and mistrust. A couple of weeks ago, we had the privilege of hosting our By All Means Senior Fellows at Harvard University and Harvard Graduate School of Education! The week was packed with interactive opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students across the university, including a community builder and an exclusive student event hosted at Winthrop House, in collaboration with the Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Ethics and the Center for Public Service and Engaged Scholarship at Harvard. The event was well attended by students from the College and graduate students from across Harvard, who had the valuable opportunity to participate in table discussions with our Senior Fellows. Each Fellow discussed a leadership dilemma from their work in the field of cradle-to-career place-based partnerships. Students were asked how they would have acted in the context of the specific leadership challenge described, allowing for an interactive learning experience on leadership. Our Research Director Lynne Sacks recently attended Opportunity Insights's (OI) third annual Conference on Economic Opportunity that brought together scholars with diverse perspectives on the determinants of economic opportunity and intergenerational mobility. The conference featured opening remarks from OI's Director Prof. Raj Chetty and a keynote from Henrik Kleven, Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University. In 2024, we partnered with OI to launch the Upward Mobility Doctoral Fellowship, a research Fellowship that combines the power of “big data” research with the expertise of practitioner organizations working in the #cradletocareer field to improve evidence on upward mobility for children and youth. The Fellowship is training a new generation of researchers in collaborative research that can impact practice and policy for cradle-to-career place-based interventions.
