Afraid to ask for a recurring donation? Don't be! Around 12% of recurring donors begin on Giving Tuesday — so you have your open door to ask. But remember: Everyone wants to make a real difference, share how giving on a recurring basis specifically empowers your mission. For example: • "Our goal this year is to maintain 100 clean streets throughout Chicago — each monthly gift of $50 provides the resources to clean one." • "$100 a month provides an hour of weekly tutoring to one of the 48 children we serve who are struggling in school." • "Your recurring gift of $25 helps us invest in new church partnerships, allowing us to share the Gospel in a new city, state or region."

So what happens when too many #nonprofits put most of their time, effort and money into asking for donations from the Big Three? The Big Three strike back. And it won't be a fun sequel. In episode 4 of my State of the Nonprofit Sector video series, I discuss the current "spray and pray" approach, what will happen because of it and what we need to start doing. Individual giving is down. Donor retention sucks. We've created this problem. We can fix it.

Learn more about Hostage US and what we do to support families and former captives:
The core of the Hostage US mission is to ensure that families and former captives receive the support they need when they need it. While this support can come in many forms, some of the most tangible resources we provide are described in the articles in our publication, The Journal. In there, we highlight common themes relevant to this often underserved and overlooked group. In honor of Hostage US’s 8th anniversary, we are pleased to share a sampling of these articles, which we hope will bring further insight into the plight of those we serve. We ask you to support this amazing mission with a donation so we can continue to deliver support to those who need it. https://buff.ly/4aux6A1

Housing - A Basic Human Right: It’s easy to dismiss those experiencing homelessness as outcasts, often thinking, “Just go get a job,” without acknowledging the complex circumstances many face. In a society heavily reliant on credit, many individuals cannot secure housing simply because of poor credit—a barrier stemming from a lack of financial literacy, a skill not everyone is taught. Managing money, building credit, and navigating financial systems are relatively modern concepts and can feel foreign, especially when compared to societies where credit is not the primary pathway to housing, such as in parts of Africa or other regions with different economic systems. Moreover, mental health struggles add another layer of difficulty. Some individuals cannot maintain stable housing due to challenges with mental health, yet Western society often expects everyone to achieve perfect mental health, an excellent credit score, and impeccable money management to be deemed “acceptable.” This expectation is far removed from the reality of the human condition, where many factors, often beyond one’s control, impact stability. This is why organizations like St. Joseph Center are vital. They help people experiencing homelessness—families, individuals, and children—transition from the streets into housing. Housing is not a privilege; it’s a basic human right. This holiday season, regardless of political views, consider donating to the St. Joseph Center. They are making an undeniable difference in the lives of many, proving that we are all interconnected. What affects one human being affects us all. By supporting organizations like this, we not only provide shelter but also empower individuals to thrive, dream, and contribute to a stronger economy. Together, we can make a significant impact on our society. When people’s basic needs, like housing, are met, the entire community benefits. Together, let’s support the mission to end homelessness and create a society where everyone has the opportunity to live with dignity, a fundamental right that we all deserve. Let's show our empathy and compassion by supporting this cause.
