The UK Semiconductor Institute is launching to connect industry, academia, and the government. This institute will serve as a 'single point of contact,' bringing in specialist skills, tools, infrastructure, and market readiness support. It aims to advance the UK semiconductor strategy, which promises up to £1bn funding over the next decade. Launching this autumn, the institute aims to unify the sector, focusing on areas where the UK can lead globally, such as advanced materials and innovative semiconductor manufacturing. Industry leaders, including the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology's Semiconductor Advisory Panel and trade association techUK, have welcomed this move. 'The institute represents a significant opportunity for building new infrastructure in support of areas where the UK can lead on the global stage,' said David Moore, CEO of Pragmatic. Great to see a new UK Semiconductor Institute announced by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology this morning, to support key components of the government's Semiconductor Strategy to grow the sector. Our CEO David Moore comments: We were delighted to complete the largest European semiconductor venture raise in December 2023, co-led by UK Infrastructure Bank and M&G Investments, with 70% of the round coming from UK investors. This funding will accelerate continued expansion of our manufacturing capacity in the Northeast of England taking volume from billions of flexible integrated circuits (FlexICs) to tens of billions per year. As a UK-based semiconductor company, servicing a global customer base, we welcome efforts to provide access to technology to foster the growth of emerging businesses, drive the expansion of the sector talent pool and promote international partnerships. The institute represents a significant opportunity for building out new infrastructure in support of areas where the UK can lead on the global stage, including advanced materials and disruptive, new approaches to semiconductor manufacturing at scale. Always encouraging seeing gov's invest in the semiconductor ecosystem. The Netherlands has launched the ChipNL Competence Centre, to strengthen innovation and position in the global semiconductor market. This centre will act as a hub for collaboration between industry, academia, and government, focusing on advanced chip design, production, and research. I imagine this will also play an overall benefit for growing the EU semi ecosystem in whole. #semiconductor #chipmaking https://lnkd.in/e5iW_Tqb

📢 This great news for the #UKPowerElectronics #Semiconductor sector 🇬🇧 The UK government has announced the creation of the #UKSemiconductorInstitute. Tasked with promoting the sector to investors and attracting foreign investment in British research, the new independent institute will advocate for the voice of the industry. Intended to be a single point of contact for researchers, academics, and the public and private sector, the new independent institute will also be tasked with helping deliver the government’s national strategy, a £1 billion ($1.24bn) plan to support domestic semiconductor development that launched a year ago. It will also be responsible for growing the skills necessary for the sector, building on the £4.8 million ($6m) allocated by the UK government to support eleven skills programs across the UK. Even though a lot of peers have been drawing comparisons of the level of investment in semiconductor as compared to US and EU semiconductor strategies (which is no doubt valid). However, the definitive steps being made by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology over the last year or so are a testament of the realisation as to how important #powersemiconductors are for future economies and scientific innovation #Semiconductor #PowerElectronics #Technology #Innovation #Skills

"To further develop the sector, the MPI has laid out action plans for relevant ministries, local governments, research institutes, and universities. [...] Businesses are also urged to take a more proactive role in exploring opportunities within the semiconductor value chain. [...] Dung stressed the importance of closer cooperation between the government, academia, and the private sector: Vietnam has a rare opportunity to integrate deeply into the global semiconductor value chain. [...] This can only be achieved if all - ministries, local authorities, businesses, research institutes, universities, and experts, both domestically and internationally - work together." Canada is strengthening its semiconductor industry connections with the New York region through a new partnership between Quebec's C2MI and NY CREATES in Albany. The partnership aims to enhance research opportunities, workforce development, and collaboration between the two organizations that are part of the key semiconductor corridor spanning Eastern Quebec and Upstate New York. The goal is to leverage the capabilities of both the Albany NanoTech Complex and the C2MI facility in Bromont to advance innovation, build workforce pipelines, and foster economic development across the Canada-U.S. region. This aligns with bilateral efforts to create a semiconductor manufacturing corridor to reduce dependence on other countries for critical chips and materials. Canada's Semiconductor Council is also working to strengthen connections, including building a semiconductor corridor in Western Canada to complement the existing one in the Northeast.
