"The goal is to create a vehicle that’s not only affordable but also user-friendly. Farmers should be able to operate it without needing technical expertise,” says 17-year-old Suhani Chauhan from Delhi. Suhani has developed the 'So-Apt Agro' — a solar-powered, multi-functional farming vehicle designed to empower small-scale farmers. Her innovation reduces operational costs while significantly cutting carbon emissions. Her journey began in Class 7 during a school trip to Manesar, where she firsthand witnessed the hardships of farmers. accionvegana by their struggles and the alarming rates of farmer suicides, Suhani felt compelled to make a difference. By Class 8, she was already sketching designs and, with her science teacher’s guidance, applied for a copyright to bring her vision to life. The So-Apt Agro is a cost-effective alternative to traditional tractors, priced at around Rs 2 lakh to make it accessible to economically weaker farmers. Suhani aims to further reduce the cost through mass production. Her dedication and innovation earned her the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar Award. Reflecting on her motivation, she shares, "I saw the farmers toiling all day, and I couldn’t help but feel sympathetic for them. What shook me the most, though, were the heartbreaking statistics on farmer suicides. That’s when I knew I had to do something to help." As part of the People’s Resource Initiative with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), #PRC aims to promote urban agriculture in Delhi through outreach meetings with the #councillors and the Horticulture Department of #MCD. The rationale for #urbanagriculture outreach is three-fold. Firstly, urban agriculture promotes environmental sustainability and helps create local systems of food production. Secondly, focusing on urban agriculture complements and aids various national and global initiatives including The National Education Policy recommendations to inculcate agriculture in school and college curricula, the #UN Sustainable Development Goals and the #Delhi government’s focus on Green jobs. Finally, the meetings with councillors raise awareness about the Citizen; ‘s Draft Policy on Urban Agriculture in Delhi created by the People’s Resource Centre on Urban Agriculture. In 2023, Rauli and Maddoke cooperatives of Punjab's Moga district were shortlisted as intensive societies for the promotion and implementation of water-saving technologies. The CIPT team has since installed digital soil moisture sensors on the lands of 50 farmers from each of these cooperatives as a part of the 'Carbon Credit Program'. Recently, the project coordinator of Moga, Ferozpur and Bathinda, Mr. Balraj Singh reached out to farmer Sukhdev Singh, based in Rauli, to get his feedback on the functionality and advantages of the soil sensors. Offering his feedback, the farmer Sukhdev Singh has stated, "I have been engaged in farming for the past twenty years. Two decades ago, groundwater levels were approximately 10-15 feet below the surface. We relied on 5HP motors for water extraction. However, the groundwater level has now declined by nearly 150 feet, necessitating the use of 25 HP motors. It is alarming how rapidly the water table is diminishing in Punjab, making water conservation essential. This urgency prompted me to partner with CIPT and implement the digital soil moisture sensors. Initially, we encountered some technical challenges, but the sensors have significantly contributed to minimizing water and energy wastage, as well as lowering input costs. Previously, we lacked precise knowledge of when to cease irrigation, leading to excessive water extraction and flooding of the fields while we remained at home. The soil moisture sensors provide advisory to stop irrigation, allowing us to promptly rush to the fields on our motorcycles to turn off the motors." In partnership with CultYvate, CIPT aims to empower farmers like Sukhdev Singh to make informed decisions regarding water and energy management, ultimately improving their carbon credit. It was indeed very gratifying to meet Rahul Bakare from Urdhvam Environmental Technologies Pvt. Ltd. Rahul has spent 10 years researching the solutions for recharging the underground water table. India, which is already suffering from severe depletion of the underground water resulting in rapidly drying borewells, needs sustainable solutions to replenish this water to avoid a disaster that could result. It was intriguing to know that as you go deeper beneath the surface, water takes as much as millions of years to seep through from the run-off at the surface. The 'Bore-Charger' is a revolutionary product, and it would be a great thing if the State Governments and Industries came together to benefit from this initiative.
