WOTR and Fertis India collaborate to empower rural agriculture in Maharashtra! 🤝 WOTR is pleased to announce its partnership with Fertis India Pvt Ltd aimed at revolutionising farming practices and empowering rural communities across Dharashiv, Solapur, and Jalna districts in Maharashtra. This partnership leverages the complementary strengths of both organisations. FIPL, a leading provider of crop nutrition and crop defence solutions, brings its deep knowledge of agricultural needs while WOTR, with over 30 years of experience in community empowerment, offers a unique understanding of the challenges faced by rural farmers in the region. Through this MoU, FIPL representatives will create awareness of their entire product portfolio among farmers. Following a selection process, FPOs (Farmer Producer Organizations) supported by WOTR will have the option to purchase FIPL's products and solutions. WOTR will advise FPOs in procuring suitable agricultural inputs after assessing both FIPL's offerings and the specific needs of each FPO. Beyond productivity gains, the collaboration is committed to promoting climate-resilient agriculture through practices that enhance soil health and water conservation. This will make farms more adaptable to the effects of climate change. Under the visionary leadership of District Collector Jasmeet Singh Siddhu, an integrated initiative is driving sustainable growth for over 60,000 farmer families, aligning with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision to double farmer incomes. By converging flagship schemes like PM-KUSUM, the National Horticulture Mission, and RKVY, the administration has introduced game-changing solutions: solar pumps, drip irrigation, farm ponds, and quality seeds. These efforts, combined with community involvement through Gram Sabhas, NGOs, and farmer groups, have created a model of trust and collaboration. The impact speaks volumes—farmers now grow three crops a year, incomes have doubled, and reliance on rainfall is a thing of the past. Recently, Mary Vattamattam and Bablu Ganguly visited us at Tiptur. They are one of our biggest inspirations for what we are trying to do at Akshayakalpa. I keep saying that farming has become unviable and is a dying profession, that farmers are leaving farming. As Bablu reflects, people think cow dung is disgusting and wonder why groundnuts aren't visible on top of the crop. Bablu and Mary are people who have worked since the last 34 years to change this. Having settled in Anantapur, they started The Timbaktu Collective, the focal point of their work being preserving the commons and creating communities who can govern themselves in a sustainable way.   'Kalpavalli' is the name given to about 4,000 acres of grassland owned by local communities, instead of corporations or the government. Along with this, they have also pioneered dryland farming initiatives. They have helped to build a financial cooperative system for women with ₹56 crores in circulation - all of it handled democratically by the women themselves. Their work has also involved setting up innumerable Farmer Producer Organizations which, again, are self-sustaining and locally governed.   I was honored to talk to them through our Good Food Movement initiative. The topics we touched upon ranged from the current state of farming, challenges in rural development and their own experiences in building The Timbaktu Collective. While my weekdays are spent navigating the dynamic world of High-Frequency Trading (HFT) as a Trade Monitoring Engineer, my weekends offer a welcomed escape to the rustic beauty and simplicity of rural life. There's something truly magical about tending to the fields, feeling the earth beneath my feet, and witnessing the cycle of life unfold with each passing season. From sowing seeds to harvesting crops, every moment spent on the farm is a testament to the timeless rhythms of nature and the invaluable lessons it imparts. Balancing the fast-paced demands of the financial markets with the slower pace of agricultural life may seem like a juxtaposition, but for me, it's a harmonious blend of two worlds. While my work in HFT requires precision, agility, and constant vigilance, my time on the farm offers a sense of grounding, connection, and fulfillment that complements my professional endeavors. In Palampur, where the air is crisp, the scenery breathtaking, and the sense of community palpable, I find solace in the simplicity of rural living. A decade ago, Jayanti Mahapatra and her husband, Biren Sahu, returned to their native village, Salebhata, in Kalahandi after successful careers in Bengaluru. Seeing the economic disparity and migration issues, they decided to make a difference. Today, their startup, Manikstu Agro, is transforming not just Salebhata but 40 nearby villages through sustainable goat farming. With a "goat bank" and community-based breeding, they collaborate with the National Agricultural Research Institute in Phalton, Maharashtra, to implement best practices. “My husband and I were always passionate about farming and had visited a lot of high-tech farms, agro companies, dairies, poultries and other agri-ventures. We wondered if something similar could not be done in Odisha. This is why we started Manikstu in Kalahandi,” Jayanti told TNIE. To start with goat farming, the farmers receive two female goats as a loan from the goat bank. Once the goats deliver, Manikstu requires farmers to return half of their goats' offspring to the goat bank. With 40 veterinarians, including 27 local women and youth, Manikstu offers vital services like checkups, deworming, and vaccinations. The startup also helps farmers market goat products like manure, milk, and ghee. Manikstu has been a success story, with farmers shifting from seasonal migration to profitable goat farming.
