The theme for the International Day Of Forests 2024 - ‘Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World’ – gives us an opportunity to tell the story of ITC’s extensive work in #afforestation, spread across 11 Indian states. Over the years, we have greened over 1.1 million acres and supported 174 million person-days of employment among some of the nation’s poorest. Our innovative afforestation programme focuses on developing plantations on wastelands, supporting livelihood opportunities for many small and marginal #farmers and at the same time, creating a positive environmental impact. We train the farmers in modern agricultural practices and provide them with high-productivity clonal saplings developed by ITC scientists. In recent years, we have been expanding our forestry footprint in remote regions of Chhattisgarh and Odisha. Already, more than 17,000 acres have been greened in these two states, benefitting over 9,000 farmers. ITC has made #sustainable and #inclusive growth the bedrock of its corporate strategy. The Company’s sustainability approach has not only led to globally distinctive performance but also contributed to making the enterprise, its value chains and the rural communities it engages with much more resilient. #InternationalDayOfForests2024 #Afforestation #PlanetPositive #PeoplePositive #TheITCWay

“When faced with barren land and a lack of resources, many would have given up. But I saw it as an opportunity,” Amai Mahalinga Naik told TNIE. Imagine a hilltop, baked dry under the relentless sun, devoid of life. This was the desolate canvas that Naik, a farmer from the remote village of Adyanadka in Karnataka, inherited in 1978. While many might have seen only hardship, Naik, with unwavering determination, saw an opportunity. Born in 1945, Naik had no formal education, so he spent his early years toiling as an agricultural labourer. His dedication caught the eye of a local landlord, Amai Mahabala Bhat, who recognised Naik's potential and gifted him a two-acre plot—a barren promise. But water, the lifeblood of agriculture, was nowhere to be found. Undeterred, Naik turned to an age-old tradition: digging horizontal tunnels, known as "surangas", into the hillock to access hidden water reserves. This backbreaking and risky endeavour often yielded little reward, but Naik persevered with unwavering resolve. His efforts earned him the title "The Tunnel Man of Karnataka." Naik didn’t stop at just one tunnel — he dug another to ensure a steady water supply for his family’s needs. His goal was not just survival but creating a haven. With water secured, Naik transformed the barren land. He built trenches to capture rainwater and recharge the water table, sculpted slopes into terraces (step farming) to conserve soil and water and constructed a water storage tank for efficient irrigation. Today, the once-barren land is a thriving ecosystem of areca nut palms, coconut trees, cashew trees, banana saplings, and pepper vines. Naik’s farm has become a beacon of sustainable agriculture, drawing over a thousand visitors annually. His innovative zero-energy micro-irrigation system, powered by gravity and rainwater, stands as a testament to his ingenuity. But Naik’s vision goes beyond his own success. He advocates for "minimalistic and simple living" and actively promotes organic and sustainable farming practices to inspire future generations. #organicfarming #waterconservation #farmerinnovation #greenrevolution #ruralindia #inspiration #karnataka [sustainable agriculture, organic farming, Amai Mahalinga Naik, Tunnel Man of Karnataka, zero-energy micro-irrigation, step farming, rainwater harvesting]

We at Raah Foundation are doing some heavy duty lifting to meet our SDG Goals 13 : Climate Action and 15 : Life on land. We have already started ecological restoration by conserving and starting the reforestation process on 1,200 acres on commons on the Northern Western Ghats in the district of Nashik, Maharashtra using rewilding techniques. This is done by protection and plantation of 184,000 saplings of native indigenous species. In just 2 years, we are already experiencing the impact : - wild life is bouncing back. Leopards and hyenas love the safe spaces we have created and are treating then as maternity wards and having their babies there. We are protecting 290 species of flora and 204 species of fauna - ground water is improving. Of the 18 wells that we are monitoring at the foothills, 44% are already showing better performance - 27% to 450% regeneration and regrowth from root stock and tree stumps of trees that were previously cut - 27,000 labour days of employment created for the community in their own villages - plant nurseries with 600,000 saplings of native forest species We now are reorganizing and building capacity to scale up to meet our target of ecological restoration of 50,000 acres on Northern Western Ghats. The work is immense and cannot be done by any single entity. It needs the collaborative effort of several entities including the government, local village and district administration, technical partners, funding partners and other NGOs. Should you have a passion for reviving our ecosystems on the Northern Western Ghats, do join us. What is Charvaka Philosophy? Charvaka, or Lokayata, is an ancient Indian philosophy that emphasizes materialism and rational thinking. It advocates living in the present, guided by sensory perception and direct experience. Key Ideas: Materialism: Only the physical world exists; supernatural beliefs are rejected. Empiricism: Knowledge comes from what we can perceive with our senses. No Afterlife: Denies concepts like the soul, karma, and reincarnation. Hedonism: Encourages seeking happiness and avoiding pain in this life. Skepticism: Critiques rituals and religious authority as irrational. Charvaka challenges spiritual dogmas, urging us to live fully and focus on the tangible realities of life. Charvaka's philosophy is often criticized for being too simple or focused on pleasure. Some argue it lacks depth and dismiss it as a call for indulgence or a rejection of spirituality. But is there more to Charvaka’s teachings than meets the eye? Could this practical and grounded philosophy actually hold the key to a meaningful life? Exciting News! The 2nd issue of the Atmashakti newsletter is here - “Seeds of Life – Reviving Hope, Resilience, and Heritage” In this issue, we are delighted to share stories of resilience and change of farmers from 5 states of India (Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand). The newsletter highlights how a quiet revolution is transforming the landscape of agriculture in rural India. Our “Mission Brown to Green – Hariyali ki Dusri Kranti” has been instrumental in driving these transformations. In July 2024, the Mission Brown to Green was started in Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, to transform rice fallow lands into fertile havens by cultivating pulses as a #SecondCrop. This initiative encourages #ZeroIrrigation cropping in rain-fed areas, driving us toward a sustainable and prosperous #ViksitBharat. We are grateful for the support of government departments, stakeholders, and communities. As we power towards #SustainableAgriculture #ClimateResilience, your continued support is essential.
