This edition will feature clubs that qualified based on their continental championships over the past four years. Key Features of the 2025 Club World Cup: 1. Expanded Format: Teams are divided into eight groups of four. The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage, starting with the Round of 16. The competition concludes with a final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey【6】【7】【9】. 2. Qualification Criteria: UEFA is allocated 12 spots, CONMEBOL 6, and other confederations receive 4 slots each, with one additional spot for the host nation. Notable participants include Real Madrid, Manchester City, Palmeiras, and Al Hilal. Inter Miami qualifies as the host representative【6】【7】【9】. 3. Historical Context: The new format replaces the annual Club World Cup, transitioning to a quadrennial schedule similar to the FIFA World Cup. The annual tournament will now be replaced by the FIFA Intercontinental Cup【6】【7】.

FIFA announced the calendar of 104 games for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in Canada, the United States and Mexico. Together he informed the 16 stadiums used during the tournament and their respective host cities. This will be the first World Cup organized by three countries, in 16 cities: 11 in the USA, three in Mexico and two in Canada. FIFA has separated the matches into three main areas — West, Central and East Coast — and each of the 48 teams will play the first phase within one of these regions. The teams will be divided into 12 groups in the initial phase. The two best countries in each group and the eight best third-placed countries will advance to the second phase, starting the knockout stage. The group stage will have 72 games, in all venues, and will take place between June 11th and 27th. The first part of the knockout stage will run from June 28th to July 3rd, in 14 cities. The round of 16 will take place in eight stadiums, between July 4th and 7th. The World Cup will only take place in the United States from the quarter-finals onwards. The last four game days of the group stage will feature six matches per day. Extra time added at the FIFA tournaments One year ago, I posted about added extra time in the women’s World Cup in Australia 2023 and now it seems like we are seeing same pattern in the Men’s U21 and Women’s tournament at the Olympics 2024 in Paris. Let’s have a look at the first rounds: 1st Round: Women’s Olympic Tournament, Paris 2024: ESP - JPN: 90+7 CAN - NZL: 90+11 NIG – BRA: 90+9 GER – AUS: 90+7 FRA – COL: 90+12 USA – ZAM: 90+5 ➡️Average added time per game: 8,5 minutes ➡️Range from: 5-12 minutes 1st Round: Men’s Under 21 Olympic Tournament, Paris 2024: UZB – SPA: 90+10 ARG – MOR: 90+20 GUI – NZL: 90+14 EGY – DOM: 90+9 IRQ – UKR: 90+14 JPN – PAR: 90+6 FRA – USA: 90+9 MLI – ISR: 90+8 ➡️Average added time per game: 11,25 minutes ➡️Range from 6-20 minutes (I recognize that the ARG-MOR game was prolonged under special circumstances) My first thought was that FIFA tournaments seem to have more extra time added compared to UEFA tournaments, so I checked the first round of Men’s EURO 2024 in Germany to compare. 1st Round: Men’s Euro, Germany 2024: 6 groups, 24 teams and 36 games played: ➡️Average added time per game: 7,7 minutes ➡️Range from 4-18 minutes The FIFA tournaments are so far having more extra time added than the UEFA EURO 2024 tournament, but in general, coaches should be aware of the amount of extra time added, which leads to considerations about physical exhaustion of the starting players, timing and use of substitutions and the relatively bigger impact on female players because of physiological differences between men and women.

Next year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup will not have any sites on the U.S. East Coast, a sign FIFA will place games along the Eastern Seaboard in its expanded 32-team Club World Cup. CONCACAF said Wednesday that BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, PayPal Park in San Jose, California, and U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis are the three new venues among 14 sites in 11 areas picked for the tournament, which runs from June 14 to July 6. Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, and PayPal Park were chosen from the area south of San Francisco. Other Gold Cup sites are Arlington, Texas (AT&T Stadium); Austin, Texas (Q2 Stadium); Glendale, Arizona (State Farm Stadium); Las Vegas (Allegiant Stadium); San Diego (Snapdragon Stadium and St. Louis (Citypark). After the group stage, the quarterfinals will be June 28-29 before the semifinals on July 2 and final on July 6. Which sites will host specific games has not been determined. FIFA has not officially announced sites for the Club World Cup, which is slated to start June 15 and end July 13, but reportedly has settled on nearly an exclusive set of East Coast venues. Mexico has won nine Gold Cups, including 2023. The U.S. has won seven, including 2021, and Canada won in 2000.

In particular, UEFA decreased the number of participants in the U-17 final tournament from 16 to 8 beginning on 2025. FIFA reported about changes to FIFA World Cup U-17 on 14 March 2024 (https://lnkd.in/dnCMsUDe). Since 2025, the number of participants of the tournament will increase from 24 to 48. The championship will also be held annually rather than biennially from 2025. Meanwhile, the U-17 tournament was played for odd dates of birth, and the FIFA U-20 World Cup was conducted for evens. The new format has not yet been announced. The number of UEFA’s participants is unknown. The quarter final match between France and Portugal will be a riveting one, after France as the host in 2016, was defeated by a Portugal squad not as good as the present Portugal squad. The latter triumphed despite being underdogs. France, will face a tougher Portugal this time around, making for a quarter-final filled with so much poise. France arguably got their best redemption by winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup after two years of losing in the finals of a continental championship they hosted. That being said, revenge for the 2016 loss will still definitely be in the offing. It is also worthwhile to note the following; 1. France are yet to score from open play in the tournament, with their only goals coming from a penalty by Kylian Mbappe and two goals from the opposing team. 2. Portugal do have a record of ups and downs in the tournament, with two wins, a loss to Georgia, and a win over Slovenia via penalty shootouts. Kicking off at 21:10, Gonzalo Quesada’s Italy will face New Zealand Rugby in the third and final test-match of the Autumn Nations Series: a particularly special encounter because it will represent an unprecedented ‘première’ in the stadium, the result of an agreement signed between Juventus and the Italian Rugby Federation (Federazione Italiana Rugby / FIR).
