The way dual-enrollment programs are designed and intended to work has a lot to do with their impact on both students and the institutions offering them, CCRC's John Fink told Inside Higher Ed. “In some places the mindset is shifting toward access, what we call ‘deep dual enrollment,’” Fink said. “That approach has extra costs and requires a real commitment in terms of outreach and extra support. But there are increasing incentives to take it because of the better enrollment returns … it really is an opportunity for colleges to grow their pool of future students.”

Inside Higher Ed has published "Report: Creating a Road Map to Dual-Enrollment Offerings," featuring research from the Los Angeles Regional Consortium (LARC) and the Career Ladders Project (CLP). This report highlights best practices for building and scaling dual-enrollment pathways that connect high school students to college-level courses. Dual enrollment is a proven strategy for student success—boosting college completion rates, reducing debt, and opening doors to higher education for traditionally underserved groups. The report showcases how partnerships between community colleges and high schools in the Los Angeles region are advancing these goals by designing intentional, equitable pathways for student achievement. The article details how six high school and community college teams collaborated during the Dual Enrollment Pathway Institute, focusing on assessing partnerships, selecting pathways, and planning implementation. By aligning resources, courses, and student support services, these teams are creating opportunities for students to excel both academically and in their future careers. We are thrilled to have this important work shared and hope it inspires further efforts to expand equitable access to dual enrollment nationwide. This is how you can reduce college cost on a pathway program to skilled trades, short term training and stackable certificate to degree programs.
Once ‘programs of privilege,’ dual enrollment pathways at community colleges are shifting to focus on a broader range of students and career options. “Some places are building dual enrollment into secondary CTE programs of study,” CCRC's John Fink said. “And in many other places that just isn’t happening very much. Their dual enrollment offerings are in the university-bound accelerated academic track.”

An excellent article on building high school dual-enrollment programs, and how these programs are changing the way today’s students find their individual career paths. Dual-enrollment is a win-win for the student, their families, and American industry. Our Secondary Education Coordinator Donna Smith, a retired physics and optics teacher, is working with community colleges around the country to train teachers and help build dual-enrollment programs for the optics and photonics industry. In the greater Rochester, NY-area, there are 22 high schools offering dual-enrollment programs in optics. Alexis Spilman Vogt, PhD, Endowed Chair & Professor of Optics at Monroe Community College and Executive Director of Workforce & Higher Education at AmeriCOM, said that 28 percent of students who are enrolled in the program this academic year took a dual-enrollment optics course while in high school. We need to build these programs nationwide and the optics industry can help! For more information, contact AmeriCOM. #Optics+Photonics #TheFutureIsOptics

In the 2019–20 academic year, there was a notable departure from the longstanding trend of increasing enrollment in remedial courses, writes Tiffany T. of New America on the CAPR blog. After nearly two decades of growth, the percentage of community college students enrolled in remedial coursework dropped from 23% in 2015–16 to 16% in 2019–20. The period from 2016 to 2020 coincided with a great deal of reform to remediation that likely contributed to this decline.

Be the bachelor’s degree completion institution of choice for Hudson County residents … be the most transfer-friendly public university in the state … consistently increase completion rates year-over-year for all students. These are just some of the 10 goals New Jersey City University set for itself in the institution’s first Strategic Enrollment Plan. Viewed as the next critical strategic planning phase of the university’s commitment to its refreshed mission and vision, school officials say the 36-page plan has a keen focus on addressing the enrollment challenges facing higher education institutions across the state and nation. Similarly to the Academic Master Plan, NJCU’s Strategic Enrollment Plan is driven by four new institutional strategic pillars:

Big news for Marion County students! The Seamless Admissions program at Indiana University Indianapolis is expanding once again. Originally launched in partnership with Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) for flagship high schools, the program extended to IPS innovation high schools last year. Now, as reported by the Indianapolis Star, the initiative is broadening its reach to include students across Marion County—opening the door for even more seniors to pursue a college education. There is strong bipartisan support at the state and federal level to grow high school dual enrollments at community colleges. Four year colleges are aware of this as well, and they are forming partnerships (transfer agreements, cost sharing, and course sharing) with local colleges and high schools. Commercial publishers like Norton ensure dual enrollment students have access to the same rigorous course materials that their traditional college counterparts receive so they can develop the necessary critical thinking skills to succeed in future coursework and the workforce. #studentsuccess #learningoutcomes #dualenrollment
