To forge a career outside of medicine, your responsibility is to create opportunities, grab them with both hands and run with them as far as you can when they present themselves. But, real talk - a lot of the time you rely on other people to give you those opportunities and the truth about my career is that I'm lucky I met people who took a chance on me early, and Ashley is one of those.
In 2012 (12 years ago!), Ashley McKimm gave me my first ever part-time, non-clinical job at the BMJ. It was my 'F3' year and I worked one-day-a-week while I was locumming, doing a degree in education and commuting to a clinical teaching job in A&E in Brighton - fair to say that was a pretty experimental (and very fun) year.
If I hadn't done that BMJ job, I wouldn't have understood Quality Improvement as much as I did from working on Innovations, I'm not sure I'd have got onto the FMLM leadership scheme, which was my route into policy and then into Digitalhealth.London, accelerators and then focusing on comms for healthtech, so taking that one opportunity could have literally made all the difference - you never know how important saying 'yes' might be.
The conference on 19-20 November (Future Health at BMJ Group) is exactly what I needed in my early career. Missing from the innovation/healthtech space has been a front door for people wanting to innovate without knowing exactly how and innovation really is for everyone. It's not everyone's responsibility but if you want to be involved in it and learn about it, you should definitely have a non-judgemental route in and this one is more about practical application and stories rather than splitting hairs on expert niches.
Really looking forward to this session and a chat with Ashley that you can be a fly on the wall for. If you're attending and want to know anything specific, feel free to DM me and we can work it into the chat.
See you there!
