Elof plans 2,500MW green hydrogen facility in Erongo Elof Hansson Hydrogen Namibia (Pty.) Limited is planning to develop a major green hydrogen and ammonia production facility in the Erongo Region. The project will feature a 2,500MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, 70km of power lines, and a desalination plant. The #Hyphenproject aims to produce 350,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, backed by a $10 billion investment. The initiative, located in the Tsau Khaeb National Park, will harness Namibia’s solar and wind resources to build wind farms and solar power plants, totaling 7 GW of capacity. Key highlights: ✅ Job Creation: The project will create 15,000 jobs during construction and 3,000 permanent jobs once operational. ✅ Environmental Impact: The project will cut 5-6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. ✅ International Support: The Namibian government has secured $20 million in initial funding and €1.7 billion from European partners, especially Germany. Harnessing local content for Namibia’s green hydrogen future By Joseph Mukendwa Namibia is poised to become a leader in the green hydrogen sector. With vast renewable energy resources, the country has the potential to not only meet its own energy needs sustainably but also to become a significant exporter of green hydrogen. According to research, the green hydrogen sector is likely to contribute 600,000 jobs by 2040. The key to unlocking this potential lies in the development and implementation of robust local content policies. Mr Thomas Frohn, our TÜV SÜD Product Manager for Green Energy, joined a collaborated green hydrogen project workshop organised in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für international Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in Windhoek, Namibia. In partnership with LBST and Rebel, the workshop focused on establishing technical standards across the hydrogen value chain and certification schemes of green hydrogen for the local hydrogen industry. Namibia has vast ambitions to become a global hydrogen hub in Africa, using hydrogen for domestic use and export to global off-takers. The aspirations to become an attractive, high-quality hydrogen supplier are supported by an excellent geographical location and environmental conditions, being one of the world's sunniest and most sparsely populated countries in the world. The workshop, which included valuable presentations and knowledge exchanges with the Namibian Standards Institution, is set to play a pivotal role in driving Namibia's National Standardization Strategy and National Quality Infrastructure. Thomas emphasised the importance of adapting international standards and aligning closely with activities in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. This strategic alignment will serve as the accelerator for creating the necessary technical foundations. The initiative sought to foster stakeholder engagement and formulate recommendations for establishing standards and certification schemes for green hydrogen in Namibia, poised to emerge as Africa's renewable energy hub.
