Japan is the No. 2 leader in construction equipment manufacturing worldwide, led by the impressive market share of companies like Komatsu and Hitachi Construction Machinery, both top 10 OEMs. In a recent analyst brief, BuiltWorlds Research Analyst Audrey Lynch takes a look at the role Japan is playing in shaping the industry's advanced equipment and robotics landscape. She looks into the area's advances in equipment, like Komatasu's FrontRunner Autonomous Haulage System, as well as efforts to achieve carbon neutrality and the global standards being set in the field of robotics. "Japan is a global leader in robotics, utilizing advanced systems across industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and construction," she writes, calling out contractors Kajima, Shimizu Corporation, and Obayashi Corp for their achievements in this area. Gallant Outlines Volvo’s Journey Toward Sustainable Construction The term “sustainability” is associated with higher initial cost and as a buzzword to appease investors. As it applies to reducing carbon footprint while maintaining productivity, however, it is a top consideration for OEMs, fleets, and rental equipment providers. Volvo Construction Equipment is one manufacturer taking concrete steps toward finding efficient and green alternative power solutions for heavy equipment. Volvo CE’s parent, Volvo Group, also manufactures buses and trucks, which have been using electric solutions for years. This has positioned the company to address the heavy equipment side, leading to an aggressive set of targets for the development of electric and hybrid machinery. In 2019, the company launched its first six battery-electric machines, utilizing 48-volt batteries adapted from the forklift industry. Automation is another piece Volvo is exploring as part of its vision for sustainable equipment. The focus is not on achieving fully autonomous machines, rather it encompasses operational enhancements, such as power steering and dig assist technologies, which help operators work more efficiently and reduce fuel consumption, according to Gallant. Volvo CE debuts new product line-up at Volvo Days 2024 Volvo CE has revealed its biggest ever new equipment launch, showcasing a new lineup of both diesel and electric machines at its headquarters in Eskilstuna, Sweden. Melker Jernberg, Head of Volvo CE, says, “In this time of rapid change, the global community needs the construction industry to step up and meet societal challenges with safer, smarter and more sustainable solutions. “That is why we at Volvo CE are taking a leading role in driving this transformation, investing and partnering across the entire value chain to push boundaries in the right direction. “At Volvo Days, we display our most ambitious response yet to those challenges, working together with customers to move our industry forward.” The company introduced a new lineup of crawler excavators that included the Volvo EC500, EC400, and EC230, which have maximum operating weights of 52, 41 and 25 tonnes respectively. The range also features the EC210 and ECR145, all of which have been enhanced with intelligent technology in a new electro-hydraulic system. The improved human-machine interface (HMI) has been designed to boost fuel efficiency, productivity, safety, and overall cost-effectiveness. Speaking of the new excavators, Kurt Deleu, Head of Product Management Excavators, said: “We have always been proud to lead the market with our innovative line of excavators, and now with this new range we are helping our customers get even more out of their machines. “This modern design significantly improves the operator experience, allowing machine and human to deliver a powerful performance fit for the challenges of today’s worksites.” While Volvo provided a sneak-peak preview of its all-new A40 hauler, which is set to be launched later this year, this recent event also marked the launch of the R60 and R70 rigid haulers. Similar to other Volvo CE machines, the new additions to the portfolio can be powered by renewable fuel (hydrogenated vegetable oil), significantly reducing carbon emissions compared to traditional diesel. Alongside already launched electric solutions, such as the 23-ton EC230 Electric excavator and cable-connected EW240 Electric MH, the company presented an array of new battery electric equipment. These included the EWR150 Electric, the first of Volvo’s electric wheeled excavators, and the L90 Electric and L120 Electric wheel loaders, which are scheduled for to be introduced from late 2024 in limited volumes across selected markets. According to the manufacturer, the new machines “are a cleaner, smarter choice for customers looking to decarbonize their operations”. The wheeled loaders and wheeled excavator are supported by the company’s broadest ever range of charging solutions to date, which include the new PU40 mobile power unit, for compact equipment. Automated welding machines increase not only the quality but also the speed of work, which is important for large projects such as wind farms. ✅ #RobotisedAssembly Two robotised assembly stations in Żary are another step towards the future. The assembly robots provide exceptional accuracy and are able to handle heavy, large-scale structural components, which traditionally required the efforts of many people. ✅ #InnovativeMaterials Low-carbon steel is a worldwide innovation. We are also using it in our first projects. It is produced almost exclusively from recycled raw material and fired in steel furnaces powered by renewable energy. Its use makes it possible to reduce the carbon footprint over the entire life cycle of the turbine by 10%, as well as reducing CO2 emissions by 66% for every kilogram of steel compared to conventional steel. #Smulders is constantly investing in the latest technology to not only follow trends, but to set them.
