Managers- 100% of your interns have a secret right now. It's a secret pain. A worry. It's easy to fix. Now, and throughout summer, your interns are anxious about whether to ask about the prospect for full-time employment after graduation. Even the most engaged, competent, and assertive interns struggle with the dilemma of whether to initiate the discussion for fear of appearing too aggressive. "Am I being too pushy? When are decisions made? Am I even doing a good enough job? Will it anger the boss or ruin my chances if I ask?" It is easy for even the best and most empathetic managers to be unaware because it has been so long since many of us were in those shoes. Help them out. Initiate. Shed light on the process, timing, and expectations. If business conditions are unclear or unstable, all the more reason to be transparent about expectations. Don't delay. If you're an outlier who covers all of this on day 1, then feel free to pat yourself on the back. Interns- This is a very common dilemma. Your best course of action depends heavily on your personal situation. #management #productmanagement #internship #leadership #empathy

Breaking the Myth: Interns ≠ Unprofessional Behavior I’ve noticed something that many of us might have experienced: sometimes, when an intern speaks up, takes initiative, or even asks for clear approval, it gets labeled as “unprofessional behavior.” But why? 🤔 When interns ask for clarity, seek guidance, or even challenge a point (in a respectful way), it’s not a sign of rebellion. It’s a sign of growth and curiosity. Yet, rather than encouraging open communication, some managers shut it down, framing it as a competition, or worse, a lack of professionalism. Here’s a thought—if you can’t say “yes” or “no” when asked for approval, or if you take it personally when someone seeks feedback, who’s really being unprofessional? Let’s shift the narrative. Instead of stifling interns, let’s mentor them to grow into confident professionals. After all, today’s interns could be tomorrow’s leaders—if we give them the chance to shine. ✨ #Internships #Leadership #ProfessionalGrowth #MentorshipMatters #linkedincreator #personalbranding

"Managers Are the Main Reason Internship Programs Fail: Here’s Why" Internship programs often fall short not because of the interns but because of how they're managed. Here’s why relying on traditional management approaches can lead to failure — and what to do instead: 1. Task-Oriented vs. People-Oriented Managers who focus solely on task completion miss the opportunity to nurture interns’ growth. Without guidance on the why and how behind tasks, interns often feel undervalued, disengaged, and even lost. Leaders, by contrast, create a sense of purpose that keeps interns motivated and aligned with the organization’s goals. 2. Lack of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) Managers who lack EQ skills may struggle to connect with interns on a personal level. Without empathy, self-awareness, and good communication, managers may fail to understand interns' unique challenges or emotions, leading to miscommunication, disengagement, and a negative intern experience. 3. Failure to Encourage Growth and Learning Managers often assign repetitive tasks, thinking they’ll build experience, but this can make interns feel stagnant. Leaders, however, prioritize growth by offering diverse, challenging opportunities that foster learning, adaptability, and critical thinking. 4. Absence of Mentorship Internship programs thrive on mentorship, not just management. Managers who focus only on output may neglect to mentor interns, missing the chance to develop them into skilled, confident professionals. Leaders mentor their interns, guiding them in problem-solving and career development. 5. Lack of a Long-Term Vision When managers view interns as temporary help rather than future talent, it limits the program’s potential. Leaders, on the other hand, see interns as potential future hires and invest in developing their skills, setting both the intern and the organization up for long-term success. In summary: If your internship program isn’t thriving, it may be because it’s managed, not led. Shifting from a managerial to a leadership mindset — with a focus on purpose, EQ, mentorship, and growth — is the key to a successful, sustainable internship program. 🎬✨ From Screen to Strategy: Management Lessons from The Internship ✨🎬 Had the incredible opportunity to explore management concepts through the lens of the movie The Internship! Using my presentation, "Aligning Film Insights with Essential Management Skills," I connected the film’s narrative to critical aspects of leadership, adaptability, teamwork, and innovation. Here’s a sneak peek of what I shared: 🌟 Adaptability: The transition from traditional sales roles to mastering cutting-edge tech skills. 🌟 Teamwork: Overcoming generational differences to highlight the strength of diverse teams. 🌟 Leadership: Inspiring without authority, through listening, guiding, and leading by example. 🌟 Innovation: Tackling challenges with creative problem-solving and brainstorming. 🌟 Resilience: Navigating workload, feedback, and performance to achieve growth. A huge thanks to Miss Rumani Bhandari ma'am for providing this enriching opportunity and platform to showcase my perspective. 🙏 The session was a great reminder that lessons in adaptability and innovation aren’t confined to classrooms or boardrooms—they can come from anywhere, even the movies. 🎥 #ManagementLessons #Leadership #MBAJourney #TheInternship #Teamwork #Innovation #Adaptability #Resilience Let me know your thoughts, and feel free to share how movies or books have inspired your management journey! 🚀

🌟 Reflecting on my journey through college internships, I've gleaned invaluable insights into leadership. Here are some guiding principles that have shaped my approach: ⭐️ 𝐁𝐞 𝐯𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐛𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥! Authenticity fosters connection, especially with interns navigating the corporate world for the first time. Facilitate their growth by sharing experiences and insights. ⭐️ 𝐁𝐞 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦! While the workplace isn't a family, cultivating genuine friendships with your team members enhances collaboration and mutual respect. ⭐️ 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩! Admitting mistakes and demonstrating strong work ethics sets the tone for your team. Micromanagement rarely yields results. ⭐️ 𝐁𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮! Surround yourself with talent from diverse backgrounds, fostering innovation and excellence. ⭐️ 𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐲, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬! Promote a culture of psychological safety where every team member feels valued and empowered to contribute. ⭐️ 𝐍𝐨 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚, 𝐧𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠! Respect your team's time by ensuring meetings are purposeful and engaging, leveraging efficient communication channels like voice notes when appropriate. ⭐️ 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠! Inspire excitement and motivation by continuously innovating and implementing fresh strategies aligned with organizational goals. Creating a sense of belonging and showing appreciation for your team's efforts are essential ingredients for success. Them: "What difference can an intern really make?" The Intern: It’s amazing how often companies overlook the potential of junior talent. 🚀 Curiosity, drive, and a ‘let’s get it done’ attitude can outshine years of experience—especially when that experience isn’t evolving. It’s not about age; it’s about who’s ready to push boundaries and grow. 🌱 If their best days are still ahead, it’s our responsibility to provide the tools and mentorship they need to thrive. So, for all the managers working with interns, here’s my advice: ✅ Be a mentor, not just a supervisor: They need guidance, not just direction. Help them grow into their potential. ✅ Give them real work: Skip the busywork. Let them contribute in ways that matter. ✅ Create a learning culture: Foster curiosity. Make sure they feel safe asking questions and exploring new ideas. ✅ Set clear expectations: Goals and timelines matter. Clarity is essential to their success. ✅ Provide constant feedback: Help them learn and improve by offering actionable, constructive feedback regularly. ✅ Broaden their experience: If possible, let them explore different areas. Help them understand the bigger picture. ✅ Be patient & supportive: Mistakes happen. Encourage them to learn from those moments and keep moving forward. ✅ Celebrate their wins: Even the small ones. Recognition can be a powerful motivator. Investing in your interns today means you could be shaping your next star hire tomorrow! 🌟 Thanks for the much-needed inspiration! Told to Redo Work, Then Asked to Stick to the Original? 🤔 Here’s What I Learned . . . During my internship, I’ve experienced this strange cycle: I finish a task and feel good about it, but my manager says, “Hmm, try doing it differently.” So, I go back, rework it, and when I share the new idea, they say, “Looks good, go ahead!” But once it’s done, they come back with, “Actually, the first version was better—let’s stick with that.” At first, it was frustrating and confusing. But over time, I realized it’s not just about doing work differently—it’s about learning and growing. Here’s what I’ve come to understand: 🧠 Exploring new ideas matters: They weren’t rejecting my work. Instead, they wanted me to try different approaches and strengthen my problem-solving skills. 🔄 It’s teaching me to be flexible: This process has helped me handle feedback better and stay open to change, even when things feel repetitive. 🤔 Even managers are figuring things out: I’ve learned that sometimes, they don’t know exactly what they want until they see a few versions—it’s just part of the process. 🚀 It’s preparing me for bigger challenges: Every revision isn’t just about the task—it’s about building patience, adaptability, and resilience, which will help me in the long run. Embrace the Process 🌱 Instead of feeling discouraged, I’ve started seeing these moments as growth opportunities. Every bit of feedback is shaping me to be more resilient, adaptable, and prepared for bigger challenges. #InternshipExperience #WorkplaceLessons #GrowthMindset #ProfessionalGrowth #ProblemSolvingSkills #LearningAtWork #FeedbackMatters #Adaptability #ResilienceBuilding #FutureReady #EarlyCareer #WorkplaceReality #InternshipDiaries #LifeOfAnIntern

Aside from offering executive coaching and organizational strategy, I also spend a lot of my time mentoring young designers, product managers and creatives who are early in their careers or looking to enter the today's workforce. 3 questions that are consistent with every level... 1) How do I create a narrative that stands out? 2) How do I survive a grueling interview process? 3) How do I navigate complex processes & orgs. One thing that continues to be a major challenge for my mentees and clients is how unruly and competitive the space is right now. There's nearly NO difference in the process for interns, new hires or promotions. Much of today's processes are being shipped to an algorithm or so rigorous that few will meet the criteria. The reality is - there is something fundamentally broken with today's process. Subjecting intern candidates to the same interview rigor as a permanent hires just reinforces the fact that the system needs to make significant changes. The reality is this...most current employees and hiring managers would have a difficult time clearing multiple interview cycles and gates required today. So how do we fix this? -> Companies need to fully re-evaluate their hiring processes - shift from cookie cutter & copycat processes to looking at the dynamic value of the team & organization. -> Hiring managers need to be empowered to build their teams - base new hires on complimentary and emerging skills rather than a menu of checkboxes and tasks. -> Start investing in Apprenticeships and Fellowships along with Internships - apprenticeships is a way to not only bring new people in, but grow them. • Apprenticeships invest in talent while investing in their growth by creating opportunities through hands-on learning and real life projects / applications. • Fellowships are great for companies looking to shift into new areas or expand their skills in ways that benefit through fresh new perspectives. Internships allow individuals to work on projects, but they are generally only included in research or small tasks that support the broader team initiatives. As someone who benefited greatly from Apprenticeships with several small and mid-sized companies, it would be incredible to see companies invest more in teaching, training and growing fresh talent rather than putting them through the equivalent of “Squid Game: The Hiring Edition” for a handful of internships. #coaching #training #mentoring #apprenticeship #fellowship #internship #hr #hiringmanager #leadership #design #product #technology #students

6moQuick tip: as an intern set the expectations that you have from the internship with your managers early. Mention one of your goals as getting a full-time offer. Another way is you approach it with curiosity. Ask your manager what skills and performance will land someone a full time role. Understand from them who are the stakeholders that will make the decision on the full time offer and key steps to land one. Most (if not all) of the managers want you to succeed. They want you to get the most ot of your internship. Don’t hesitate to initiate the conversation. Do it early, do it welll :)
