🏗 Mumbles Coastal Protection Scheme Update 🏗 Here's a rundown of the achievements made over the past month across different segments of our Mumbles Coastal Protection Scheme: 🌊 Wall A - From North Tie-in to Oystermouth Car Park: We're excited to announce that all bases for Wall A up to the foreshore have been successfully completed, with the beach area restored to its original levels. With 18 wall pours completed, we are determined to finalise the remaining 2.5 pours up to the North tie-in within the next two weeks. 🌅 Wall B - Oystermouth Car Park to the Bowling Green: Significant progress has been made on Wall B, with completed stepped base pours, vertical wall elements, wave return construction, and the installation of additional piles for the new sea view steps at the car park. We're now gearing up for the next phases, focusing on extending the wave return and finalising transition areas, paving the way for public realm improvements. 🌴 Oyster Wharf Area: Following the completion of raised planters and repaving of the plaza area, we have shifted our focus to the sea wall construction, along with the installation of lighting columns and other amenities to enhance the promenade experience. 🌊 Oyster Wharf to Southend Slipway – Revetment C: Construction of Revetment C slab is underway, with significant progress in lower, mid, and upper pours. The secondary wall is nearing completion, and efforts are also directed towards revetment heels and wave return construction. Excitingly, we've made fascinating discoveries during an excavation near Southend Slipway, unearthing historical timber vessels and artefacts. 🚗 Southend Slipway to Verdi’s: We've successfully completed the construction of echelon parking spaces and are working on promenade diversions and temporary footpath closures to facilitate ongoing construction activities. Wave return walls and revetment construction are the focus of our efforts in this segment. I am being flooded with these - at least 3-4 a week now. Given how easy it is for these types of attaches to capture MFA and be the root cause of very serious breaches, these are no laughing matter. Following the UK effort, which more or less eliminated these dangerous and effective phishing attacks, #Telstra introduced a number - 7226 -where you can forward such scam SMS messages. Telstra then scans the messages and blocks all future efforts. However, in the UK, this forwarding service works for ALL mobile networks. In Australia, only Telstra has this service. #Vodafone and #Optus to not support it (at least, the last time I checked). If I were a grumpy old man (heh), I would claim that this makes these other telcos parties to cybercrime. There is an easy and proven way to smash this problem at a national level. This video captures just a small section of the North East Link, Bulleen Road upgrade. In a quick 1 km drive, we spotted 5 construction site exits clearly visible from the road that use FODS rumble mats to prevent mud, rocks, and other debris from tracking onto public roads. What makes FODS mats ideal for urban projects is that they don’t require any ground preparation or digging, hence eliminating risks of damaging any buried services. Many major projects in Victoria have reported that after installing FODS mats, they decreased the number of street sweeper runs and saved money on water usage. Before 1930, US 99, which incorporated the Ridge Route, followed the general route of Sierra Highway to its intersection with the "northern" San Fernando Road. Today, it is difficult imagine how these mountains were a major barrier to road construction, but it is important to bear in mind how significantly the construction of the two freeways altered them. Building a road which would provide more direct routing for US 99 was not possible until the late 1920s, when both road building technology and funding had sufficiently advanced to permit it. The Weldon Canyon bypass (officially known as the "Newhall Alternate"), which is now covered by I-5, was completed in 1930 and offered a substantial saving of time as well as increasing safety. Until its widening in 1951, this road was three lanes, with the suicide lane in the middle. North of the US 6 interchange, US 99 entered Weldon Canyon. Weldon Canyon is a stark contrast to the barren mountains that surround it and even though much of it has been paved over by present I-5, the lush vegetation that dotted its hillsides is still visible. Before 1928, this was a steep canyon, filled with vegetation reminiscent of someplace in the Pacific Northwest. The first road to cross it was only three lanes wide and hugged the western wall. It was widened into a four lane divided highway by 1953, but generally followed the previous alignment, which was engineered well enough to be incorporated into the newer highway. In fact, much of the widening work done in the 1940s and 1950s used the older alignments as half of the divided and widened road. The section between the I-5/SR-14 interchange and Lyons Ave was one of the last sections of US 99 to be replaced by I-5, having been bypassed between 1967 and 1972. Much of this highway still exists and is known today as The Old Road. Ridge Route history by Jerry Reynolds: Ever since the days of Phineas Banning, General Beale and the Butterfield Overland stage, vehicles made their way out of Los Angeles, through San Francisquito Canyon, down the Grapevine Pass, and then into Bakersfield. The California Highway Commission was formed in 1911, and one of its first priorities was to build a simpler, more direct road through the La Liebre Mountains. That task fell to the man with the unlikely name of W. Lewis Clark. Frustrated in several attempts to locate an easy way across the stony barrier, Clark, at last, blazed a trail right over the top from the mouth of Castaic Canyon to Gorman. It was called the Ridge Route. After a year of toil, during which four-horse Fresno scrapers graded hilltops alongside chugging Caterpillar tractors to the tune of a staggering half-million dollars, the Tejon Route, as it was originally dubbed, opened to the motoring public late in November 1915. The Auto Club did a little calculating, finding that in the 36 miles between Castaic and Gorman, there were 642 curves that added up to 97 complete circles. It did cut 60 miles off the road.
