When should you think you are a staff software engineer? Here is my two cents: - You have a working knowledge of almost all the tech stack that the project relies on. - You have gained expertise in more than one field over the course of your career. - You have been a senior software engineer for more than 3+ years with a total of 7+ years of experience in the industry. (This is debatable. Depth and breadth of experience matter more than the specific number of years.) - You care more about technical stuff than people management. - You can set the technical direction for the current or any new project. - Your work impacts not only your team but also other teams. - You don’t bind yourself to any particular technology. - You can guide any stakeholders if needed. - All the senior engineers look up to you. This is a generic template for a staff engineer. But, there might be cases where someone is only staff in one area. That will depend mostly on the product and team size. For example, a staff engineer in iOS means that a person has more in-depth knowledge of iOS than any senior iOS engineer in the team. #SoftwareEngineering #TechLeadership #CareerDevelopment #SoftwareEngineer #TechnicalLeadership #SeniorEngineer #TechCareer #EngineeringLeadership #EngineeringGrowth #CareerPath #StaffEngineer #ProfessionalDevelopment

The junior software engineer says, "I'll build the solution you described." The mid-level software engineer says, "I'll build a solution for the problem you described." The senior software engineer says, "Are you sure you're solving the right problem?" The principal software engineer says, "Why are we even including technology in this?" (Half-kidding about the last one.) Career progression in software engineering has less to do with technology, and everything to do with asking the right questions, listening, and communicating with stakeholders and developers alike. #career #softwareengineering #development

Junior software engineer : "There is a hot bug. I'll have to check how this feature works. I am not sure what the solution is" Senior software engineer : "There is a hot bug. I know this is how it exactly works in class XYZ. This is what the fix to the problem should be" For junior software engineers, it is crucial you build subject matter expertise and deep understanding of how things work exactly and not just at the surface level. You become the point of contact when things aren't working right or where there is an issue. That is also when you can propose and implement bigger and newer changes, because you fully understand how it works today. #softwareengineering

If you know more, you can do more, BUT it dosent mean that you'll be able to get others to understand more or do more on their own. Job proficiency and understanding does NOT directly correlate to effective communication skills. Efficient communication is a skill that has to built all on its own.
“If someone was a very good communicator but a terrible software engineer would you hire them?” I was asked this recently and I think it’s a false dilemma. I have never met a good communicator that doesn't have the core skills for their domain. The reality is, to be a good communicator, you need to understand what you are communicating about. Therefore the great communicator, terrible software engineer doesn't exist. The closest you get is great communicator and mediocre software engineer. I'd take them over great software engineer with terrible communication skills any day.

You are a senior software engineer if you take on the most boring and annoying tasks of your team. Senior software engineering is a mindset — it shows that you understand the importance of getting things done, no matter how mundane the tasks might be. It shows that you understand that business priorities come before your personal preferences. Being a leader means dealing with both the good and bad aspects of the job. #softwareengineering

I agree that this presents a false dilemma. In software engineering, communication is not just about collaborating, it’s essential for effective knowledge transfer within IT teams. Knowledge sharing ensures that best practices, architecture decisions, and project insights are disseminated, reducing the risk of siloed expertise and single points of failure. A strong communicator, even if a mediocre IT engineer, can facilitate this process by documenting, explaining complex systems in layman’s terms, and ensuring team members are on the same page. They help onboard new developers and make sure knowledge is retained, which is crucial for long-term team resilience and scalability. On the other hand, a brilliant engineer with poor communication skills could inadvertently hoard knowledge, limiting the team's collective growth and causing gaps when they leave or transition. Effective knowledge transfer is what keeps teams adaptable and prepared for future challenges, so I'd prioritize communication skills in those cases where collaboration and learning are critical to success.
