As someone who has worked in the senior housing industry, I've received many inquiries about the best fit for friends and family members who are looking for community in the broadest definition of the word. Recently, a friend in her mid-60s who has attended our Vitality Society solo ager group led by Sara Zeff Geber, Ph.D. reached out to me to inquire about senior housing most suitable to her. Firstly, she's having trouble finding a job because she feels she's too old and too much of a generalist. Secondly, she needs to lower her cost of living and is considering selling her apartment in NYC. Lastly, she's a Solo Ager who has never been married and has no kids. She's looking for a community where she can connect with others who share her interests and vitality. She needs to find her people to enjoy activities and meals, as an example. Although she doesn't have a specific state in mind, she does have family in Texas. However, she's concerned about the extreme weather conditions, such as tornadoes. As the industry evolves, it's becoming increasingly clear that people (such as boomers) don't always fit into traditional boxes although she is eager to explore the various options. I'm open to suggestions and have already offered her five options, but I know there are many more out there. Industry colleagues let’s work together to find a fit! She like many is ready to move but doesn’t even know what she’s looking for or her options hence her reaching out to me. Loneliness is deadly. Community yields vitality. We need to rethink the concept of two-income households and instead focus on building supportive communities. If you're single and have close friends, consider ways you can support each other. This applies to both men and women. Even if you're married or in a committed relationship, you can still find ways to live cooperatively and have a communal environment. Compatible! Many people are so focused on individual ownership that they overlook the value of a shared, supportive community. Personally, I would rather have a 6 or 10-bedroom house and live with compatible people, growing and evolving together. The traditional idea of individual home ownership as a marker of success has limited our perspectives on housing. Success can also mean creating a supportive community under one roof. Of course this isn't for everybody but it would definitely help in certain ways. #TrudeanHaye

Hey friends! 👋 Did you know that intergenerational residential communities are tackling some of today’s biggest issues—like social isolation and housing affordability? These communities intentionally mix people of all ages, helping neighbors connect, support each other, and create a sense of belonging. 🏡❤️ It’s a pretty brilliant concept—grandparents, young professionals, and kiddos all thriving together, sharing space (but not houses!) and creating bonds across generations. However, it’s not always easy getting these communities off the ground. Things like zoning, subsidies, and funding hurdles slow progress. A new report, "Healthier Lives Across Generations: A Blueprint for Intergenerational Living", offers some fantastic strategies to overcome these challenges.
