Just be yourself.
Sounds easy enough, but is the hardest thing to do.
In preparation for BETWEEN THE TWO OF US, our upcoming House of Beautiful Business festival in Tangier, Morocco (May 2–5), we caught up with two prolific film people: German-Luxembourgish actor Vicky Krieps (who had just wrapped up a project with legendary auteur Jim Jarmusch, co-starring Cate Blanchett and Charlotte Rampling) and Moroccan Filmmaker Maryam Touzani, who’ll be joining us in Tangier alongside her husband and creative partner, filmmaker and producer Nabil Ayouch.
Their most recent project together, "The Blue Caftan," examines what it means to let yourself be seen by someone else, without a protective veneer. “Cinema is essential in opening something and building hope—opening our perception and changing the way we look at the other,” Touzani told us.
A recent study by the Journal of Personality and Social Behavior shows that we’re more inclined to like people who show vulnerability. In fact, people who blush and embarrass themselves easily are often seen as more trustworthy and generous. This is known as the Beautiful Mess Effect.
Krieps told us she never thinks of character as something separate from herself. As a performer, she focuses on staying present and open. There are several scenes in Krieps’ breakthrough "Phantom Thread" (she was cast opposite method acting powerhouse Daniel Day-Lewis) where you can see her doing nothing; the effect is so uncannily real that it’s almost uncomfortable to watch.
*Being*, not acting, is a formidable challenge for an actor. “I can tell you that it’s really difficult not to act, because I tried to perform this circus trick where you don’t act, and I don't always achieve it, you know,” Krieps told us. “But I always try, honestly try, just be there and remove my ego and everything. Just be there, and only listen and only react.”
