Clever redesign achieves Development Consent With clever redesign and experienced negotiation, Dickson Rothschild took this project with site legal issues, a bulky design and complicated coastal site issues, and helped to fast track a development consent at Section 34. The result is a high-density development offering housing types demanded by the local market, within an attractive street frontage and a human-scale buildings design. How much does it cost to live in the award-winning Accordia development in Cambridge? My next instalment of 'Icons of Architecture' is out, where I argue that new build developments have just as much capacity to become iconic as heritage buildings. Designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Maccreanor Lavington, and Alison Brooks Architects, and constructed by Countryside Partnerships and Redeham Homes, Accordia set a new benchmark for the construction of high density housebuilding in the UK. 🏆 Accordia was the first housing development to win the prestigious Stirling Prize but at the same time highlights the inherent tensions with creating new communities from scratch. It provides a fascinating site that gives us crucial lessons for the future of the new development which we so desperately need. Really nice approach to the housing crisis: in-filling between the existing apartment buildings, instead of tearing them down and displacing the residents and their strong social networks. Remarkable – considering this is social housing – that the residents got to choose the architect... although they always should, since top-down design is known to fail. I really love this architect, Peter Barber. He is, like the presenter says, "An architect who's not an arrogant xxx." :) His residential buildings are very humane – human scaled, friendly, social – and also beautiful as urban sculptures. And the project paid for itself by selling housing to people could pay full price. Why would they want to live next to social housing? FCBStudios has been appointed by heritage developer City & Country to lead the redevelopment of the western end of the Bath Press site, in collaboration with landscape architects Grant Associates. The 5.3-acre site in the city of Bath, acquired in March, offers a significant opportunity to deliver additional high-quality homes in this well-connected area. Located within the World Heritage site boundary, the Bath Press site provides future residents with access to the city’s rich cultural and historic amenities. Keith Bradley said: "We are looking forward to creating much-needed, high-quality housing in the city. This project builds on the successes of our residential work in London, Manchester, and Cambridge, including the RIBA Stirling Prize-winning Accordia Project." Dating back to the 1890s, the Bath Press site was originally home to the Pitman Press printing works, founded by Sir Isaac Pitman, the pioneer of one of the world’s most widely used methods of shorthand. It's great to see this article about the approval of our plans for Derby's Friar Gate Goods Yard in Architects’ Journal. Adam McPartland, Director of Glancy Nicholls Architects, said: “We are overjoyed that the required funds can now be invested into saving these distressed 150-year-old listed buildings. Glancy Nicholls Architects has proudly brought its expertise in restoration and retrofit design to visualise the sustainable future of two of Derby city centre’s most notable historic structures.   “From the outset, the overarching brief from Wavensmere Homes was for a huge emphasis to be placed on exemplary placemaking. By having a mix of commercial uses within the two buildings – and opening the inaccessible site up to create a series of new linear parks – hundreds of people will be able to appreciate these heritage assets on a daily basis.   “The designs for the 227 two- and three-bedroom townhouses that will surround the two listed buildings are bespoke. Curved and terraced street scenes will celebrate the beauty and vista of the Bonded Warehouse, while incorporating a range of energy saving technologies and strategies. "A four-storey apartment building containing 49 apartments will also reinstate the lost streetscape of the Stafford Street frontage.
