Earlier this month, I participated in the #tripleten Code Jam! Our prompt was: "Come up with digital solutions which can help cope with summer heat. Create an MVP of a digital service that your local, town, or city community can benefit from." I had the pleasure of teaming up with three other wonderful programmers, Imani Walker, Katherine Jacobson, and Jacob Reyes. Together, we developed a project aimed at raising awareness and providing support for people in need during extreme heat conditions. Our focus was on homeless veterans, homeless individuals, and orphaned/foster children, who are among the most vulnerable during such times. One of the standout features of our project is a section that integrates with an API to pull data from various charities. This data is then rendered into easily navigable cards, allowing users to find and support a charity that resonates with them. By making it simple to connect with these organizations, we hope to drive more support and resources to those in need. Additionally, our page features a form where users can input their information and a link to an image of an item they would like to donate. This information is then rendered as a card on the page, allowing other users to see and request the donated item. Looking ahead, we plan to integrate the ability to donate items or money directly to a charity of your choice through our page. We believe these enhancements will further increase the positive impact of our project on the community. I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved and the positive impact this project can have on our community. A big thanks to my team and everyone involved in making this event a success! Hey BBC News, it's BornGood, not Born Good. But anyways... Our main man Chris Barton (Operations Director), was on the tele yesterday morning explaining what we do to help businesses donate their tech securely to help bridge the digital divide. The North East struggles with over 12% of its population without regular internet access. This gap means many are missing out on vital opportunities in education, employment, and staying connected. But it's not all bad news. We are thrilled that more and more people are recognising this issue and actively taking the initiative to help out. BornGood has donated thousands of devices to children and adults since the pandemic, when the issue reared its ugly head. Now, our goal is simple: BornGood pledges to donate 10% of all the tech we refurbish to charities. As the Northeast grows with new infrastructure and development, our mission is to help everyone stay connected and empowered. There's an irony in this hectic exhortation for funds at the end of every financial year, as if reducing taxes — and therefore the amount of money available for public funding — is a good thing. And a frustration that we're still living in late capitalism where we don't just have what we need: enough food, shelter, care, mental health, peace, communities without fear. And yet here we are on the last day of the financial year, playing the game again, because — like so many other grassroots and community orgs we know of this year — we didn't secure the grant funding we need to continue our programs. We know our programs change young people's lives. We know our staff with living expertise deserve fair wages. Thank you for the generous donors who have already given — we've raised enough to keep applying for grants, but we're still $15,000 short of our goal that would allow us to run the FUSE program again before the end of the year. More ethnic minority children who are terminally ill are being referred to us by health-related NGOs. Typically, each child will spend between 1 to 4 days in the hospital each week. They come to us for tutoring in English, Chinese and Maths and FUN.  3.
