Extinct kingdoms. Episode 21: The Dakosaurus. by أيمن احمد قطينة Dive into the fascinating world of the Dacosaurus, one of the most impressive marine predators from the Mesozoic era! In this video, we explore the physical characteristics and unique adaptations that made this ancient reptile a formidable swimmer. Learn about its sleek body, powerful jaws, and evolutionary traits that helped it thrive in ancient oceans. We'll also discuss the Dacosaurus's crucial ecological role and the environmental changes that led to its extinction. A do for the Karoo! Did you know that the Karoo region in South Africa, which "landed up"–excuse the pun–in the news because of its known potential for shale gas resources, is also significant for its rich palaeontological history? Yup – history about life on Earth! The Karoo's rocks, particularly the Beaufort Group and Elliot Formation, contain numerous fossils that provide insights into the early evolutionary history of land vertebrates like tortoises, mammals, and even dinosaurs. Our Karoo has a detailed record of ecosystems from over 200 million years ago, covering major extinction events, including the end-Permian and end-Triassic extinctions. This area is crucial for understanding the evolutionary processes and responses of ecosystems to past mass extinctions. So let's not dig it up for fossil fuels. Pacific Paleontology was recently called out to one of our paleo mitigation contract sites with the message that "bones have been found"!! We excitedly arrived only to find this! Neither paleontological nor archeological these bones, which were inadvertently moved from their original positions by the construction crew, are from a modern (Recent) Mule deer, Odocoileus hemionus and so not of historical importance for our team. #paleontology, #SantaCruz, #santacruzcounty, #Monterey, #montereycounty, #paleontology, #mitigationpaleontology, #fossil, #pacificpaleontology, @pacificpaleontology, #Constructionsite, #fossilhunting, #archeology, #bones,

I taught about austalopithecines in so many of my anthropology courses. Once, I even taught a 2-year old how to pronounce it. And walking toddlers the importance of a locking knee joint and location of the foramen magnum. Of course I shared this with my college students! They learned too, quickly, how to pronounce it. Hopefully the other stuff too.😁 Still, one of my favorite topics. #Lucy #australopithecines #anthropology
November marks the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Australopithecus afarensis skeleton “Lucy.” She is referenced in the #GSABulletin article “Paleoenvironments of the earliest stone toolmakers, Gona, Ethiopia,” by Jay Quade and colleagues, at https://lnkd.in/gbpgpspf. #Paleontology #Ethiopia #Paleoanthropology #GSAPubs University of Arizona Geosciences Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Photo from the paleontological collections of the National Museum of Ethiopia, CC-BY-NC.

Russian scientists have uncovered a well-preserved baby mammoth named Yana in Yakutia, Siberia. Discovered after more than 50,000 years, the mammoth offers valuable insights into the species' life. Researchers believe Yana’s survival in harsh conditions can help scientists understand mammoth growth and adaptation. This unique find marks a major milestone for paleontology. I think the ideal move when it comes to renaming #birds would be attaching the term "saur" to every species. For example, here's a gracklesaur, a #bird whose lineage now includes being categorized as a #dinosaur. Within that category, of course, were many #species of living things that are now #extinct. The important part of #science is helping us understand material #reality. Linking #ornithology to #paleontology gives us an honest link between the present and past. We know from the #fossil record that #extinction is real and often harsh, as 99% of all living things that once existed are not gone. And while the #creation story in Genesis does depict a mass extinction, it is unfortunately unsupported by any #geological or hydrological evidence of any kind. But #creationism would be right one count about all the #animals on the ark. If there were birds there, Noah and his crew of eight overworked shit-slopping, hay-tossing, miracle-feeding #souls overwhelmed by methane and carbon dioxide would have been in the presence of dinosaurs. Just not the way #creationists depict it. Those are lies. That's why the gracklesaur seems so angry in this photo. #honesty is important in any #scientific field. Biblical literalism is not only dishonest, it is bad theology. https://lnkd.in/gtKGPQTz

Dinosaurs, like all animals, needed to reproduce to ensure the survival of their species, but exactly how they mated remains a subject of scientific investigation. https://lnkd.in/g8DN48JM #eartharchives #paleomedia #paleontology #fossil #fossils #evolution #evolutionarybiology #naturalhistory #magazine
