Russian scientists have uncovered a well-preserved baby mammoth named Yana in Yakutia, Siberia. Discovered after more than 50,000 years, the mammoth offers valuable insights into the species' life. Researchers believe Yana’s survival in harsh conditions can help scientists understand mammoth growth and adaptation. This unique find marks a major milestone for paleontology. Shape analysis is key to understanding variation in fossils, plants, animals, and anatomical structures. Geometric Morphometrics offers precise tools to study and quantify shape, revealing patterns that connect form, function, and evolution. This online course introduces the fundamentals of geometric morphometrics, including: ✅ Landmark and semi-landmark configurations ✅ Multivariate statistical methods ✅ Applications in evolutionary biology, paleontology, and beyond 🔍 A great opportunity to gain new perspectives and skills for research! I taught about austalopithecines in so many of my anthropology courses. Once, I even taught a 2-year old how to pronounce it. And walking toddlers the importance of a locking knee joint and location of the foramen magnum. Of course I shared this with my college students! They learned too, quickly, how to pronounce it. Hopefully the other stuff too.😁 Still, one of my favorite topics. #Lucy #australopithecines #anthropology
November marks the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Australopithecus afarensis skeleton “Lucy.” She is referenced in the #GSABulletin article “Paleoenvironments of the earliest stone toolmakers, Gona, Ethiopia,” by Jay Quade and colleagues, at https://lnkd.in/gbpgpspf. #Paleontology #Ethiopia #Paleoanthropology #GSAPubs University of Arizona Geosciences Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Photo from the paleontological collections of the National Museum of Ethiopia, CC-BY-NC.

A 500-million-year-old fossil has been discovered, revealing new information about the origins of mollusks. The fossil belongs to a newly identified species called Shishania aculeata, an ancient spiny slug. These early mollusks were flat, armored creatures covered in cone-shaped spines, rather than shells. The well-preserved fossils show a complex secretion system, similar to that of annelids (such as earthworms). This discovery provides valuable insights into the evolutionary history of mollusks and their ancient adaptations. Explore the details of this find and how it contributes to our understanding of life's evolution. A remarkable discovery has been made in a wine cellar in Austria, where hundreds of mammoth bones have been unearthed. The bones, which are estimated to be around 50,000 to 150,000 years old, were found in a cellar in the town of Krems, located in the Wachau valley. The discovery is significant not only because of the large number of bones found but also because of their well-preserved state. The bones are believed to have belonged to several mammoths, including adults and juveniles. The find provides valuable insights into the lives of these prehistoric creatures and the environment in which they lived. Archaeologists and paleontologists are excited about the discovery, which is considered one of the most important finds of its kind in recent years. The bones will be carefully excavated and studied to learn more about the mammoths and their habitat. The discovery is a reminder of the rich history and natural heritage of the region. . . . #MammothDiscovery #Austria #WineCellar #PrehistoricFind #Archaeology #Paleontology #tribunetrends

#DidYouKnow Arthropleura was an enormous millipede-like arthropod that roamed the Earth during the Carboniferous period, roughly 300 million years ago. It’s considered one of the largest land-dwelling arthropods ever discovered, reaching lengths of up to 2.5 meters (about 8 feet). The Carboniferous period, with its high oxygen levels and lush vegetation, created a perfect environment for these gigantic invertebrates. Their size was likely an adaptation to the oxygen-rich atmosphere of the time. https://lnkd.in/fzpnPPW #Arthropleura #giantmillipede #fossil #extinctcreature #paleontology #prehistoriclife #science #CarboniferousPeriod #ancientarthropods #prehistoriclife #giantinsects #fossildiscovery #Geology #Nature #ancientcreatures #largestlandarthropod #giantarthropod

Pacific Paleontology was recently called out to one of our paleo mitigation contract sites with the message that "bones have been found"!! We excitedly arrived only to find this! Neither paleontological nor archeological these bones, which were inadvertently moved from their original positions by the construction crew, are from a modern (Recent) Mule deer, Odocoileus hemionus and so not of historical importance for our team. #paleontology, #SantaCruz, #santacruzcounty, #Monterey, #montereycounty, #paleontology, #mitigationpaleontology, #fossil, #pacificpaleontology, @pacificpaleontology, #Constructionsite, #fossilhunting, #archeology, #bones,
