A do for the Karoo! Did you know that the Karoo region in South Africa, which "landed up"–excuse the pun–in the news because of its known potential for shale gas resources, is also significant for its rich palaeontological history? Yup – history about life on Earth! The Karoo's rocks, particularly the Beaufort Group and Elliot Formation, contain numerous fossils that provide insights into the early evolutionary history of land vertebrates like tortoises, mammals, and even dinosaurs. Our Karoo has a detailed record of ecosystems from over 200 million years ago, covering major extinction events, including the end-Permian and end-Triassic extinctions. This area is crucial for understanding the evolutionary processes and responses of ecosystems to past mass extinctions. So let's not dig it up for fossil fuels.
