Module 5 "Planning Effective Class Discussions" is complete. The module helps instructors effectively set expectations for participation, explain the role of discussion to positively impact learning, and develop an effective grading policy for participating in discussions. Faculty also learn how to leverage class discussion to ensure students come to class prepared, having completed the reading or homework assigned.

Tradition to Transformation: The Urgency of Change in Higher Education Higher education is at a crossroads. With the downsizing and closure of many smaller, private institutions on the horizon, the ability to adapt swiftly is becoming a critical factor for survival. The stakes are high, and the odds are often stacked against institutions due to deep-rooted cultural and structural resistance to change. In my latest article, "Tradition to Transformation: The Need and Urgency in Navigating Change in Higher Education Institutions," I delve into practical strategies for overcoming these challenges. A few of those include: - Understanding Resistance: Learn why change often meets resistance in higher education and how to navigate the cultural and emotional barriers that can stall progress. - Recognizing the Unique Needs of Each Division: Understand that change is not one-size-fits-all. I explore how different parts of a university—such as academics, enrollment, student life, and operations—face unique challenges and opportunities. By understanding these nuances (change within as well as change across), institutions can implement change strategies that are tailored and effective across all areas. - Empowering Change Agents: Identify how empowering faculty, staff, and mid-level administrators can drive both bottom-up and top-down change initiatives. - Leveraging Data and Adaptive Leadership: Learn how data-driven decision-making and adaptive leadership can position institutions to pivot quickly and effectively. This article was largely inspired by insights from The EdUp Experience recent 6-part podcast miniseries "The Currency of Change" with Jamie Brownlee Turgeon, Ph.D. and Andy Benis and a recent BHive conversation with Greg Satell hosted by the folks at Beyond Academics Matt Alex, Nicole Baldassarre and Gabrielle Kristofich, both of which underscore the critical importance of embracing transformation in today's rapidly evolving educational landscape. Additionally, I include the brilliant insight of Brian Rosenberg from his recent and viral book "Whatever It Is, I'm Against It: Resistance to Change in Higher Education". I am very hopeful for the future of higher education, but how it will shape up will depend on the ability of institutions to recognize the urgency of change and act decisively, efficiently, and collaboratively. Those that do will emerge stronger and more resilient in the face of these disruptions. College Closure Alert: The higher education landscape is shifting dramatically. In just the first 9 months of 2024, 28 degree-granting institutions have closed - nearly double the total closures from 2023. Key findings from The Hechinger Report: a. Nearly 300 colleges and universities offering associate degrees or higher closed between 2008-2023. b. 60% of closures were for-profit institutions. c. Only about half of affected students successfully transfer to other institutions The driving factors: a. Declining birth rates = fewer high school graduates; b. Post-COVID enrollment challenges; c. Leaders in academia are typically self-selected moving up professorial ranks sometimes groomed by mentors or following accidental role-models, but for the most part with no formal training in the executive function. The successful ones learn on the job or school themselves by trial and error. Many, therefore, fail to meet the needs of the myriad of stakeholder in academic institutions - students, staff, faculty as teacher-scholars, other academic leaders, parents, alumni, employers, state and local public officials, economic development authorities, accreditation agencies, colleagues and peers in general. This kind of training at Christ University is sorely-needed as continuing education even for the experienced academic leader. As someone who has been in academic leadership positions in private and public institutions at a large, medium and small university, I can confirm that the academic leader’s role is multifaceted and complex. The most common response I hear from people when they learn I teach Personal Finance at University of Virginia is "All students should be required to take that class." To which I respond, "All students should want to take the class." Those who don't learn while in school will likely learn from (more costly) experience. University financial reporting often creates a useful confusion by emphasizing fund accounting, which manages individual funds rather than providing a clear picture of overall income and expenses. This approach obscures key relationships between income sources and expenses, making the institution’s financial structure and programming less transparent compared to commercial business accounting. As nonprofit entities, universities do not focus on annual profit reporting. Instead, they demonstrate to various stakeholders how funds from specific sources are used, rather than presenting a comprehensive view of financial health, such as through traditional balance sheets.

Most colleges are facing financial headwinds right now, although I will note that colleges at risk of closing often cannot participate in bond markets and are outside of the scope of credit ratings agencies. Bank lines of credit are often their only resource.
