In just the first 9 months of 2024, 28 degree-granting institutions have closed - nearly double the total closures from 2023. Key findings from The Hechinger Report: a. Nearly 300 colleges and universities offering associate degrees or higher closed between 2008-2023. b. 60% of closures were for-profit institutions. c. Only about half of affected students successfully transfer to other institutions The driving factors: a. Declining birth rates = fewer high school graduates; b. Post-COVID enrollment challenges; c. Growing skepticism about highered program ROI. #HigherEducation #EducationTrends #Students #Enrollment #CollegeEnrollment #Education #StudentSuccess #HigherEd #CollegeAccess #EdChat

Just published at Forbes.com— While traditional 4-year colleges and universities are struggling through cuts, closures, and controversy, another player in the postsecondary education space is quietly winning at enrollment. Vocational community colleges have seen a 16% rise in enrollment from 2022 to 2023—and you can take your pick of reasons why. Cost and value are the two biggest drivers of this trend, with students and families asking tough questions about the actual ROI of attending a traditional university. It’s not hard to see why many young people are turning to alternative learning to meet their career needs. So—is the vocational community college up for the challenge? #EducationWithPurpose #College

According to a recent statistic, early applications are up 40% from pre-COVID numbers and rising every year. I am often asked for advice on this decision and usually recommend applying Early Action to colleges offering it. I reserve Early Decision recommendations for students who are totally in love with that college. A colleague recently shared a study that showed that 14 of the top 20 US News colleges found applying early increased admission chances by 28%. . I am passionate about working with my clients to guide the process, which includes informing parents and empowering students. Since peaking in 2010, undergraduate college enrollment has steadily declined. While statistics vary, several key factors seem to contribute to this trend which include: Rising Costs - The price of higher education continues to soar, making it less accessible for many. Inequitable Access - Not all students have equal opportunities to enroll in colleges and universities. College Readiness - A lack of preparedness for college-level coursework can deter potential students. Addressing these issues is vital for the future of higher education. What are your thoughts on how we can improve enrollment and support students better? #HigherEducation #EnrollmentTrends #Access #CollegeReadiness

College completion rates have climbed to 61.1%, the highest since tracking began in 2007! 🎓 What’s driving this? Gains among students starting at two-year public colleges and fewer students “stopping out.” This growth reflects a commitment to keeping students on track and supporting their academic journeys. Dual enrollment programs are a bright spot, with these students completing college at notably higher rates. It’s proof that early access to college experiences can pave the way for success. As leaders in education, let’s keep innovating to reduce barriers and close equity gaps. The future of higher ed depends on it! https://lnkd.in/e5S2UAsY #HigherEd #CollegeSuccess #StudentCompletion

This is the most important chart in higher education. The national conversation is often about the tiny sliver of students who might go to an elite college. The real story about college is that a huge chunk of U.S. students invest in higher education and never get a credential. See https://lnkd.in/egEkcFFq Fixing that must involve the entire educational community. - K-12 must get lower income students ready for college-level work. - Colleges must help students manage their lives, or fit education more easily into their lives, not only impart knowledge. - Businesses have a societal role and a parochial interest in education before and after graduation. - Society must support education commensurate with its importance as the most fundamental ingredient to national and personal prosperity. #education #highered #college #university #communitycollege

This is my biggest fear too. The past government has done years of damage to undermine higher education. This headline-grabbing has masked the underlying purpose of saving money and maintaining social inequality. My soon-to-be-finished thesis looks at how disadvantage impacts career development and graduate transition into employment. The findings point to the inescapable constraints of lower levels of economic, social, and cultural capital. However, the findings also show that higher education can be transformative, empowering, and providing growth in social and cultural capital to achieve desired careers. Life choices should not come down to whether you can afford them. Higher education needs equitable access and transitional support for those who need it.
Many more school leavers are questioning the value of more academic study, worried by the cost of living crisis on campus, and digesting the constant diet of negative headlines about higher education, from ‘Mickey Mouse’ courses to financial turmoil across the sector. From a social mobility perspective, the concern is that students from lower-income backgrounds are disproportionately turning away from higher education, potentially missing out on the transformative impact it can have on their futures. Did you know: For the 2023-24 academic year, the overall student retention rate for first-time, full-time undergraduates at four-year degree-granting institutions was around 82% in the United States. This reflects a consistent recovery from the pandemic, particularly with retention being highest at more selective institutions (96%) and lower at open-admission schools (around 59%)—according to Inside Higher Education and the National Center for Education Statistics. This retention trend highlights the growing importance of student engagement and support, as well as the ongoing impact of demographic and academic major choices on persistence rates. #StudentSuccess #RetentionRates #HigherEdLeadership #AcademicPersistence #HigherEducation #ExecutiveSearchFirm #Recruiting
