In October, I had the privilege of attending and presenting at the 2024 AASHE Conference in Anaheim, California. Our presentation, "People Power and AI: Leveraging Zero-Waste Technologies for Universities," emphasizes how AI-driven tools can transform waste management and sustainability efforts in higher education. Georgia State University has taken significant steps to leverage technology in its sustainability initiatives. By using Zabble's AI-powered invoice analytics, we are able to gain precise insights into waste hauling costs, service levels, and material tracking. This tool has been instrumental in uncovering inefficiencies and optimizing our processes. For example, by identifying inconsistent service frequencies and unnecessary hauling costs, we’ve been able to streamline operations and reduce expenses. The AASHE Conference provided valuable insight into how universities implement sustainability initiatives. Sessions showcased innovative projects such as renewable energy programs, advanced composting systems, and engagement. I was especially inspired by the waste reduction efforts universities use to engage students, faculty, and staff in creating a more sustainable campuses. Conferences like these reaffirm the importance of collaboration and knowledge-sharing in the sustainability community. They also provide a platform to celebrate progress, address challenges, and spark ideas for future initiatives. I returned to GSU with fresh perspectives and renewed motivation to advance our sustainability efforts even further. I want to thank my co-presenters Laura Gonzalez Ospina and Aspen Coty. Thanks to Zabble and Nik Balachandran, who have made this collaboration possible. Thanks Alicia Blount who was there in support!
