In 2024, U.S. Army North (5th Army) supported the wildland firefighting mission in Cascade, Idaho, in collaboration with the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). As part of our Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) mission, we coordinated critical resources and deployed units, including @14beb_rugged and @16thcab from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. These teams delivered vital ground and air support, conducting firefighting operations and transporting personnel and equipment. U.S. Army North (5th Army), based at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, brought holiday cheer to Pershing Elementary students through its annual toy drive. Soldiers and civilians collected gifts, including 30+ bikes, to fulfill the students’ wish lists. ARNORTH leaders and teammates opened the Homeland Defense Symposium with a visit to the National Museum of the U.S. Army as part of the Leadership Development Program. Through the exhibits and the USNORTHCOM Command Historian's prompt, they explored how the Army has defended the Homeland since 1783 through prevention, preemption, and power projection. Today, we honor the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of Medal of Honor recipient 1st Lt. John R. Fox. His actions embody the highest values of Army North and the U.S. Army. On Dec. 26, 1944, during the Battle of Sommocolonia in Italy, Fox made the ultimate sacrifice by calling for artillery fire on his own position to halt an enemy advance. His decision saved countless Allied lives and turned the tide of battle, exemplifying selflessness and bravery that continue to inspire us. We must never forget the heroes who shaped our freedoms.
