The Portland International Airport’s new terminal roof represents a monumental achievement for the #masstimber industry. We worked with ZGF Architects and Sustainable Northwest to ensure that the thousands of uniquely cut pieces of timber could be traced back to the forest of origin. Since opening in August, the project has welcomed thousands of visitors to the region and brilliantly showcases the rich history and current context of the Pacific Northwest timber industry. Timberlab's fabrication expertise was critical to the success of the Portland International Airport's mass timber roof structure, one of the largest installations of its kind in the United States. This project was one of the first to go through our Portland, Oregon facility, which was strategically located near the project site. That immediate proximity ensured meticulous quality control and streamlined logistics, enabling efficient delivery and installation. Thesis, a Portland-based digital creative agency, envisioned its new headquarters during the pandemic, rethinking office design to prioritize mid-door spaces that connect nature and a home-like atmosphere. Designed by LEVER, the 40,000-square-foot mass timber campus in Portland’s Slabtown neighborhood reflects Thesis’s values, fostering collaboration and blending city and nature. The sustainably designed building features a custom mass timber structure of CLT panels and glulam beams, fabricated locally at Timberlab. With a LEED Gold certification, it integrates energy-efficient systems, on-site solar panels, and abundant daylight, embodying a Pacific Northwest aesthetic. Fast + Epp was pleased to have provided specialty engineering support for the mass timber at the Orange County Sanitation District Headquarters Complex, located in Fountain Valley, CA. ⁠ ⁠ Completed this past spring, the complex consists of three 3-storey buildings and is one of the first mass timber commercial buildings in the greater LA region. Many integrated sustainable design features contributed to the overall green building performance - including its mass timber frame.⁠ ⁠ Upon entry, an expressive diagrid glulam roof structure framed with glulam beams welcomes guests into the lobby. Multnomah East County Library is an absolute stunner! This is Timberlab's first project as a mass timber manufacturer—our team processed and fabricated all the glulam locally here in Oregon. When completed, the new library will be the second largest in the state. Holst designed this building with the forest in mind. Walking through it, you feel like you're walking through a tree canopy, with the beautiful tall glulam timber columns enveloping you on all sides. We can't wait to show you the final building. Northlake Commons opened this year in Seattle, Washington, and brilliantly showcases the superior beauty of mass timber in modern office design. Timberlab was the project's mass timber fabricator and installer, delivering 1,394 custom glulam pieces. Kalesnikoff provided over 500 CLT panels. Nestled along Lake Union in Seattle, the project opens to a popular greenway and features 60,000 square feet of outdoor terrace deck space. Weber Thompson designed the project with a biophilic mindset, the tall glulam columns replicating the feeling of walking through a Pacific Northwest forest. For nearly two decades, the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities has been working diligently to ensure that our working forests are sustainably managed for future generations. The organization is based in Greenville, South Carolina, just around the bend from our newly operational mass timber fabrication facility. The endowment has grown to $270M, with over $100M allocated in grants since 2006. South Carolina's wood and paper products industry is one of the largest economic contributors, valued at about $23B. The increased demand for engineered wood products for the construction sector is a promising development for the nation's working forests. We’re proud to play a role in ensuring these resources are used responsibly and benefiting local timber economies. By transforming local timber into innovative mass timber products, we’re helping grow the market supply for regional timber and connect with the Southeast's rich forestry heritage. As 2024 comes to an end, our team would like to highlight a mass timber project that opened earlier this year, Live Oak Bank. The 4-story structure was one of the first jobs for our east coast division and one of the first buildings we've built using Southern Yellow Pine. Timberlab provided a full suite of mass timber services for this project: digital modeling, mass timber connection design, custom glulam fabrication, and final mass timber installation. The result is a stunning office space that pays homage to the surrounding forests of the American Southeast. We're very proud of this quality project and excited to see more emphasis on mass timber in this region across market types. Our team was brought on early to help coordinate a regionally sourced timber package. We used cutting-edge manufacturing technology to help track every piece of timber from the forest to frame and ensured the project stayed committed to its ambitious sustainability goals.
