In the pastoral communities of northeastern Tanzania, barriers like lack of resources and social support hold girls back from accessing education. Pastoral Women's Council, the oldest and largest organisation focused on supporting pastoral women in Tanzania, used their Malala Fund grant to tackle these barriers and introduced parent teacher associations (PTAs). Over three years, these PTAs reached close to 6,000 community members, changed parents’ and communities’ attitudes towards girls’ education and increased the number of girls attending and completing secondary school. • Malala Fund partner PAGED Initiative - Participatory Communication for Gender Development reports that in Kano and Kaduna states in Nigeria, girls experience violence in many forms. Some girls face sexual violence on long walks to school. Some girls face violence outside of school and often feel too ashamed or stigmatised to return to class. And some girls are abused by school officials on campuses, violating the very space that is supposed to nurture them. To socialise discussing these injustices, PAGED hosts events and workshops that help schools and community members understand the prevalence and impact of gender-based violence on girls in their community and trains media on how to report gender-based violence cases ethically and sensitively. #16days

In recent years, Nigeria has allocated 5-8% of its national budget to education, significantly below the 15-20% benchmark recommended by UNESCO. This underinvestment has left millions of children, especially girls, without access to quality education. “Girls in underserved regions, who have the most to gain from education, deserve dedicated resources to remove barriers to learning. The 2025 budget is an opportunity to right this wrong and invest in their future.” — Nabila Aguele, Chief Executive of Malala Fund Nigeria Malala Fund its partners' urge the Nigerian government to prioritise girls’ education in the 2025 budget. • In Sidama region of Ethiopia, efforts from local organisations has helped combat gender-based violence and sexual harassment. But recent socioeconomic and political instability in the country poses a threat that could reverse these gains. Malala Fund grant partner Center of Concern Ethiopia works to ensure survivors of gender-based violence have access to essential support services at school like a referral system that allows them to safely report their story and girls' clubs that act as safe spaces for networking with other girls, sharing experiences and learning from one another. Follow them to learn more about their work. #16days
