Our President and CEO, PeiYao Chen, reflects on how funding feminist movements is the key to creating and sustaining long-term social transformation in 2025 & beyond. ⬇️
As we prepare to step into 2025, I want to celebrate the remarkable wins of feminist movements —and the community that powers them. This year had many challenges. Communities faced climate disasters, war, genocide and violent rollbacks of reproductive rights. Yet, feminist leaders rose up with resilience, bold vision, and collective power: • Domestic workers in India secured Welfare Boards in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, and inclusion under the Minimum Wages Act in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, and Rajasthan—ensuring legal protections and better pay. • Abortion rights activists in Mexico extended solidarity across borders. • Climate justice leaders in the Pacific secured critical resources for their communities. • In Guatemala, an Indigenous-led movement helped stop a coup and secured representation in government These wins inspire me—and remind us all—of the extraordinary power of grassroots feminist leadership in the face of growing anti-rights opposition. I joined Global Fund for Women over ten years ago as its first Director of Learning, Evaluation, and Impact. I was drawn to its bold approach: trusting grassroots feminist organizations to lead change with flexible, no-strings-attached funding and using data to continuously improve how we work. These values continue to guide me today. Nearly 40 years since our founding, Global Fund for Women has awarded $230M+ in grants to 5,600+ organizations across 175 countries. We remain committed to scaling up our support for feminist movements on the frontlines—from Ukraine to Palestine, Peru to East Africa—providing them with the resources and trust they need to transform their communities and achieve long lasting change. Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, let’s step into 2025 with courage, solidarity, and an unwavering commitment to gender justice.

We’re still energized from #AWIDForum2024! From funding feminist movements to connecting activists across borders, this year’s Forum celebrated the resilience of feminist movements worldwide. Here are our highlights: 💬 PeiYao Chen, our President and CEO, joined "Talking Money: Who has it, who needs it, and how do we move it?" with the Alliance for Feminist Movements. We also hosted two virtual events about feminist funding. 🌈 We collectively launched Kaleidoscope to advance access to safe abortion through health systems strengthening! 📸 The panel and exhibition "From Periphery into Power" showcased eight #ArtistChangemakers shaping feminist futures through art. 🤝 We connected with 80+ organizations at the Activist Touchpoint space, and attended the regional meeting for the 2025 March for Black Women in Latin America. Thank you, @awidwomensrights and all who joined us there and virtually! 💜

The strength, courage, and resilience of Syria’s people have been a beacon of hope to the world, and we are honored to stand alongside our partners —supporting, learning, and collaborating throughout the long fight for freedom. The Assad regime has fallen, and this transformative moment demands global solidarity. We call on the international community to stand alongside feminist leaders driving revolutions and calling for justice, freedom, and dignity. Around the world, women, girls, and LGBTQI+ people are blocked from making informed decisions about their bodies and lives. In West and Central Africa, the fight for #SafeAbortion is not just about access—it’s about shifting power to local movements. Global Fund for Women’s West and Central Africa Abortion Rights “Movement Committee” is made up of eight partners from Benin, Cameroon, Guinea, and Côte d’Ivoire, collectively directing $1.2 million in grants to fund abortion rights in their communities. What works for feminist philanthropy and participatory grantmaking for movements? What doesn’t? Why does it matter? At Monday’s” Talking Money: Who has it, who needs it, and how do we move it?” event, PeiYao Chen, Global Fund for Women’s President and CEO, discussed the barriers that keep feminist groups from accessing donor funding. “Most of our funding are general support grants without strings attached and we also prioritize funding to organizations that have a harder time accessing international funding” PeiYao Chen, Global Fund for Women’s President and CEO, centered the discussion on identifying ways to shift these barriers and highlight areas where further work is needed to improve access and support for feminist initiatives. This conversation aims to identify ways to shift these barriers and highlight areas where further work is needed to improve access and support for feminist initiatives.
