AI Safety continues to be a passion of mine.. Ever since we released Purple Llama almost exactly a year ago, and growth we've seen in the community, my conviction has grown that taking a community first approach with AI Safety was absolutely the right thing to do. A few of us though wanted to dig a bit deeper and learn more about what the state of things is and where we can invest to further grow the open AI safety community. And having over a 100 partners in the AI Alliance provided a great community to start from. I hope you enjoy the survey results and find ways to contribute!! Key takeaways: - Respondents: The largest segment of survey takers (~50%) are from enterprises followed by academia, then an almost equal split between research and start-ups, and independent developers and non-profits closing it out. The majority of the respondents are from the United States, then Europe, Brazil, South Korea, Australia, India and UAE. - Applications: Chatbots, coding assistants and summarization were the main use cases deployed today. - Model popularity: GPTx and Llama topped the list followed by Mistral and a very long tail of other models. - Importance of safety: On average respondents reported that it was very high (~8 out of 10) as a critical concern for their applications. These concerns are motivated by legal, regulatory and customer satisfaction (in that order) with some driven by competitive pressures. - Regulations: The EU AI Act is the core regulation on the minds of the survey takers regardless of the region they are from. - Source of AI Safety knowledge: Mainly driven by internal teams, NIST with some leveraging AI specific safety vendors and cloud providers. - Use case risk: Running counter to many narratives, 2/3rds of respondents have not seen use cases that were too risky to deploy. - Top Gap: The community still does not trust the current benchmarks and upvoted better safety evals as the top request followed by auto red-teaming and better guardrails. No surprises here!! Please read the whole post for the details!! https://lnkd.in/ges_yeCf

We are one year old! 🎂    Last December, 57 global organizations came together to build, enable, and advocate for open source innovation in #AI. Today, we’re 140+ members strong and are just getting started! Over the last year, we’ve hit the following milestones:    ✅ 93 active projects  ✅ 1,200 collaborators  ✅ 12 working groups  ✅ 5 published AI Alliance Guides to AI   ✅ 30 events attended by 20,000 people    To commemorate our one-year anniversary, we are committing to scale up the breadth of our reach and impact by 10x going into 2025. As part of this, we’re announcing two new major initiatives – our Trust and Safety Evaluation Initiative and our Open Trusted Data Initiative – to help bolster our work promoting open source ecosystems and ensure that the future #AI landscape is rooted in safety, ethics, and a shared vision for the greater good. 2024 has been a strong first year for the AI Alliance, and we want to thank everyone who made it possible!   🎉 Join us in celebrating our first year and read more about what’s to come: https://lnkd.in/eBpN_3n8

  • The UN declared 2022-2032 the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, drawing global attention to the critical situation of many indigenous languages, and making a global call for action to identify ways to preserve, revitalize and promote these languages. To help further the International Decade, UNESCO, Meta, and Hugging Face launched an online Language Translator. https://lnkd.in/g5PmD33v We are proud to include the UNESCO language translator as an example of an AI Alliance affiliate project that demonstrates the value of open-source AI, and look forward to more projects to protect and promote low-resources languages.

    IBM Research - Tokyo

I was honored to have the opportunity to present as a keynote speaker at #Accelerate24, held at The University of British Columbia, where, together with IBM team (Jed Pitera, Joe Sehl, Sean Wagner), I shared the global efforts of IBM Research on the Foundation Model for Materials and The AI Alliance working group on material discovery. The conference was an incredible four days filled with unforgettable people and cutting-edge projects conducted at Acceleration Consortium. A big thank you to Alán Aspuru-Guzik, Brandon Lines, Sean Caffrey, Padraic Foley, Anne Robinson for the excellent organization, the invitation, and the warm hospitality! Key takeaways from the keynote: (1) We're developing a multi-modal foundation model, currently covering nine modalities: SMILES , SELFIES, molecular graphs, 3D atom positions, 3D electron density, molecular descriptors, DFT properties, UV spectrum, and text descriptions. (2) The model is applied across various sustainable material domains, such as batteries and PFAS replacements. (3) The model is aimed at being consumed via a conversational UI. (4) The open development of the foundation model is gaining global momentum through The AI Alliance. We’re excited to welcome new members to The AI Alliance as we collaborate to accelerate global advancements in material discovery! The presentation above is a comprehensive summary of the outstanding works led by Emilio Vital Brazil, Eduardo Soares, Flaviu Cipcigan, Dave Braines, Tim Erdmann, Dmitry Zubarev, Kristin Schmidt, Jed Pitera, Mohab Elkaref, Geeth de Mel, Shinnosuke Tanaka, Indra Priyadarsini, Lisa Hamada, Hajime Shinohara, Akihiro Kishimoto, and many more dedicated team members. Huge kudos to everyone involved! #ai #material #chemistry #AccelerationConsortium #ibm
