About us
Founded in 1987, Studio E Architects is a San Diego- based design collaborative led by principals Eric Naslund, John Sheehan, Mathilda Bialk and Maxine Ward. Practicing throughout the Southwestern United States, the firm’s varied portfolio—housing, mixed-use, civic, institutional, and urban planning projects—has been recognized with numerous design awards, including three National Honor Awards from the American Institute of Architects. The firm’s projects have appeared in national and international design journals and publications. The work of Studio E Architects recognizes that the meaning and utility of architecture is grounded in the specificity of context. Unique site conditions inspire solutions that connect people to the places they inhabit. This focus on both physical and cultural context produces architecture that is responsive to the natural environment, embraces everyday phenomena and rituals, and expresses a richer understanding of place. Studio E Architects provides outstanding service to public agencies, institutional clients, non-profit organizations, private developers and individuals. The firm’s efforts have been rewarded with a strong repeat client base. Recent projects include mixed-use developments, charter schools, university housing and administrative services and numerous multifamily housing developments throughout California. Much of the firm’s success can be traced to its commitment to a participatory approach to problem solving. Studio E works to build consensus among stakeholder groups ensuring creative solutions that are embraced by the community while satisfying the goals of the sponsors. Our Mission: At Studio E Architects, we design places that cultivate community, enhance well-being, and make the best use of resources. We listen carefully, uncover opportunity, and expand possibility. Diversity Statement: Diversity is a core value at Studio E Architects. We are passionate about building and sustaining an inclusive and equitable

We’re feelin’ the LOVE. This existing mural will look great in the courtyard at our under-construction affordable family apartments at University and 40th Street. Parcel 2/Numero Dos is one among four buildings of the Cuatro development in City Heights. This scattered site project being developed by Wakeland Housing will deliver 117 units to this bustling, diverse neighborhood. Parcel 2 will form the other half of a community gateway that we helped to establish in 2003. The then Metro Career Center has since received a new paint job and become the Health Sciences High Charter School. Construction update: This project is bursting with positive energy! Once a citrus orchard in Chula Vista, the “Lemon Capital of the West,” Citrus Villa now provides 54 affordable apartments for low-income seniors. Residents can embrace community through a common room with a kitchen, two garden-level terraces, and a sky deck with a lounge, fostering a sense of connection and belonging. The design recognizes its setting near Chula Vista’s historic downtown by animating the sidewalk with large storefronts, playful signage, an arcaded entry and a colorful mural inspired by the local flora and fauna. Building colors and details celebrate Chula Vista’s unique bi-national heritage. Uptown Funk - Studio E Architects addition. It's hard hats and fluorescent vests for the team here in September. We are busy supporting the construction of 4 projects in Bankers Hill/Hillcrest. This quartet of multifamily projects comes right on the heels of our small but beautiful lofts at 7th and Robinson. We are pleased to direct your attention to The Bel, 8th & University, 10th & Robinson, and 4th & Palm. These projects will add a total of 329 rental units to Uptown. #construction #uptownsandiego #letsbuildsomething #multifamily

Don't miss out on the thought-provoking discussions by Maxine Ward and Marcela Gracia if you'll be at AIA San Diego a'24 x SD. Their insights are not to be missed! Maxine Ward, AIA, Principal, will be one of the debaters responding to the question "Is San Diego a World Design Capital?" It's a Turncoats Style Debate, so look forward to some theatrics and the requirement for debaters to argue both sides of the issue. Audience participation encouraged! Marcela Gracia, AIA, Associate, will present "Drawing the future: Collaborative Visions in Architecture" which explores how graphic representation in architecture has the potential to foster community engagement and promote inclusive practices.
