Is protein powder a scam? Ritual's Chief Scientific Officer—who happens to be a muscle physiologist and knows a thing or two about protein—has a #hottake on this timely topic. Dr. Nima Alamdari weighs in: "I’ve spent over two decades studying how protein impacts health and the current protein recommendations are the bare minimum to prevent deficiency (RDA suggests 0.36 g per pound body weight). Research shows that most adults benefit from higher intake, between 0.54 to 0.73 g per pound. Higher protein intake can be essential for adults at every life stage, particularly during pregnancy, postpartum, aging, and for active individuals or those following reduced-calorie diets. Whole foods should always be the foundation of a healthy diet, but supplements can play an important role in filling gaps, one reason I'm proud to have developed the Essential Protein that Ritual offers for key life stages. That said, safety is key for products like protein powder. Some protein products have been found to contain harmful contaminants like arsenic and lead. 🔎 47 prenatal multivitamins were tested for quality and safety, and the results illuminate what we already know: women have to be the detectives, researchers, and quality assurance specialists of their own health. 🌎 We know first hand considering the efficacy of nutrients, meeting label claims, and also managing safety risks like heavy metals is no easy feat. We know what people put in their body matters and its why we open source our suppliers through our traceable supply chain. 📣 The supplement industry hasn’t seen significant reform in over 30 years, even though it’s grown over 2,000%.
