#DYK Molten iron inside the Earth’s core causes constant changes to the Earth’s magnetic field. These changes can impact navigation – from ships at sea to planes in the sky to cars traveling on land. 🚢✈️🚗 Changes to the Earth’s magnetic field are captured in the World Magnetic Model (WMM). NGA sponsors updates in the model, enlisting the expertise of NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration scientists. This model is then compared with one produced by the British Geological Survey to agree upon a final WMM to support navigation. This year's has just been released! Well, the rapid melting of sea ice is making the Arctic more accessible than ever, creating new economic opportunities and military challenges. NGA is front and center in this emerging national security mission, providing crucial Arctic mapping, monitoring and navigational products and services needed for decision advantage in the region.
