This week in 2016, Russia’s GRU unleashed "Industroyer" malware against a Ukrainian electric firm, disrupting electricity to the city of Kyiv. Six GRU officers were indicted by DOJ in 2020 for this and another #cyberattack on Ukraine’s power grid in December 2015.

#OTD in 1996, FBI agent Earl Edwin Pitts was arrested for providing information to Russia on FBI personnel, ongoing investigations, counterintelligence program strategies, and operational methodology. Pitts later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 27 years in prison.

#This week in 1961, KGB officer Anatoliy Golitsyn defected to the US while in Helsinki. He provided @CIA insights into KGB operations & ID'd Georges Paques, a French national at NATO, as a Soviet spy. Paques was later convicted in France for passing French & NATO secrets to the Soviets.

#OTD 1998, nuclear physicist Peter Lee was sentenced to prison for passing secrets to China & making false statements. While working at Los Alamos National Lab, he disclosed classified info to Chinese scientists during a trip to China and lied about the trip on security forms.
