The University of Galway, a participant in the My Green Lab Certification program, is offering an online "Green Labs Principles and Practice" microcredit course starting in February 2025. This 10-week module, in addition to several key environmental concepts, will focus on the life-cycle of materials, as well as the environmental impact of the resources and equipment typically used in scientific laboratories.   Course contributors include Dr Una FitzGerald, Dr Iain MacLaren, Dr Caitriona Carlin, and Dr Gesche Kindermann. I'm incredibly proud to announce that AstraZeneca has become the first organisation to achieve the new My Green Lab 2.0 Certification in over 78 lab spaces globally, with 65 labs reaching the highest Green level. My Green Lab certification is a key measure of progress recognised by the UN Race to Zero campaign and this achievement highlights our unwavering commitment to sustainable science. The new and more robust My Green Lab certification enables us to quantify the environmental benefits associated with our sustainable lab practices. A special shoutout to our team for making us the first organisation to achieve the highest accolade – Green certification –with 100% engagement from the scientists. This is a monumental accomplishment for any industry, and we are leading the way. Additionally, from its first day of operations, The Discovery Centre (DISC) in Cambridge has contributed to achieving our 2026 Ambition Zero Carbon target to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 98% from a 2015 baseline. This month's #HowToGreenLab is to be clear on capacity requirements and space when selecting an Ultra-Low Temperature (ULT) Freezer. You will need to know exactly how much storage is needed and how much floor space is available within your lab to house ULT units. No matter how good your ULT freezer is, if it can’t fit in your lab or store all the necessary inventory, then it won’t be much help. Additionally, keep in mind that many ULT freezers need a certain amount of clearance at the front and back of the unit to allow for adequate ventilation, which may catch some people off guard when planning how units fit into their lab space.
