Everyone seems to be reflecting on their 2024 accomplishments (POST #1) I continued to search for my next exciting and rewarding career opportunity. I have submitted many applications. I received many interviews and even several second interviews. They have come in bunches, and all seemingly fizzled out simultaneously. I have remained positive and tried to not be discouraged. I never got upset at the rejection (as many as there were). The process, on the other hand, is quite distressing and frustrating. I was once told, on a second interview, that I will be meeting with the vice president and that we (the interviewer and I) will certainly be colleagues. I never met the vice president. Another time, I was sent an e-mail by the HR representative asking if the posted salary is satisfactory. The e-mail stated that they needed to know because, if not, they will remove my name from consideration. I replied that the salary was definitely to my satisfaction. Never heard a word after that. Then, there was a position for which I submitted the application at 11:20pm and received a request for an interview by 6:27am the next morning. Despite the apparent eagerness to meet with me, after the interview, I was completely ghosted. These are just a few examples of how the process is more irritating than the rejections themselves. But this is what I did accomplish (well, a small sampling of it). Started a podcast to hear the voices of those affected by the closure of their college. This included a President, faculty and staff, and students. I am starting off the new year with a new podcast dropping this Thursday. These stories must be heard. This is a monthly social group of higher education professionals that meets over ZOOM. We share stories of closure, mergers, acquisitions, and mass budget cuts. We reflect and empathize. We theorize about what could have been done better to save the institutions we represented. But mostly, we (not all from colleges that have closed) discuss the biggest trends that will be leading to Tomorrow’s Higher Education. Next get together is Thursday, January 16, 2025 at 3:00pm EST.
