These elements are enhanced by the building’s unique features, such as its vertical height and expansive balconies. The 7th floor stands out with its 17-foot clearance and floor-to-ceiling windows, offering breathtaking views. The layout maximizes functional space, with the reception desk strategically placed to enhance the workspace, conferencing areas, and a large event space integral to the firm’s culture. We learned this week about the passing of one of GBD's founding principals, Chuck Gordon. Chuck was with GBD Architects from the very beginning--even before GBD, when it was Rudat Boutwell & Partners located on the 3rd floor of a knitting mill in downtown Portland. During that time Chuck and others invested their time and money for the betterment of the fledgling firm with the hope that it become a viable business. Some of his more notable projects are the Portland State Office Building, the Pacific First Federal Building, the Freightliner Headquarters, and the 200 Market Street Office Tower, an early modernist icon of the Portland skyline that paved the way for other modernist office towers to follow. But Chuck was so much more than an Architect, he also guided the firm's cultural ethos, informing many of the practices and traditions that GBD practices even today. It has been a somber and sobering week for our team as we remember Chuck's incredible life, but are comforted by the fact that he is with us every day in the strong foundations that he laid for GBD. Thank you, Chuck! 💖

🍾RETIREMENT RETIREMENT RETIREMENT🍾 We recently said a sad 'see you later' to a huge force behind GBD's success and culture the last two decades. For 25 years, Whit has applied his strategic design approach to GBD’s architecture and interior design projects bringing clarity to complex projects ranging in size, scale, and typology. He has managed numerous projects that include offi ce, housing, government, data centers, and healthcare, as well as a multitude of on-call tenant improvement contracts with building owners- many of which occupy spaces within Portland’s most prominent, major downtown office buildings including Big Pink, Standard Insurance, Brewery Block 4, Liberty Center, First and Main... and the list goes on and on and on. Whit has also been a huge contributor to and ambassador of GBD’s technology, culture, and analogies-bringing insight, humor, and context to our day-to-day while also keeping our operations and software programs in tip-top shape. Whit, thank you for your service, GBD will miss you tremendously!

Local nonprofit Wild Salmon Center will soon have a new headquarters in NW Portland! R&H is underway on a 10,000 s.f. tenant improvement that will provide a larger and more functional workspace for the WSC team so they can focus on their important mission of preserving wild salmon populations in the Pacific Northwest. Located in the Fitzgibbon Glass building, R&H’s scope includes replacing the exterior stair tower, framing new offices and installing new flooring and finishes throughout. Wild Salmon Center’s new headquarters will allow greater flexibility for internal expansion and for hosting social events and workshops that will continue to bring awareness to their impactful conservation work.
