The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan & our 700+ Hunger Relief Partners work to end hunger in 22 Michigan counties.

About us

The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan was founded in 1981 as a grassroots community organization serving agencies in Genesee County. Since, due to increasing need for our services around the state, the Food Bank has grown to serve a network of more than 700 Hunger Relief Partners, including partner agencies, schools, and other community organizations. Once food arrives at the Food Bank, it is sorted, inspected, and made available to partner agencies such as churches, soup kitchens, and food pantries to distribute to those in need. All Food Bank partner agencies are required to distribute food, without charges or fees, to needy clients. The Food Bank also partners with schools who distribute food through our Backpack Program and School Pantry Program and provides meals during our Summer Feeding Program. The Food Bank serves more than 330,000 families through our partner agencies per year and distributes more than 28 million pounds of food, including 11 million pounds of fresh produce annually. Through our network of partners that includes retail grocery chains and farmers, the Food Bank is able to maximize monetary donations. As little as $1 can provide up to six meals for people in need. To donate, visit www.fbem.org. The Food Bank offers volunteer opportunities in our Hunger Solution Center Monday-Saturday for individuals or groups. In one hour, one volunteer can sort enough food to feed 335 people! For information about volunteering, visit www.fbem.org or contact (810) 396-0210.

  • We are once again deeply grateful to our generous partners at Aunt Millie's Bakeries for their incredible donation. This morning, Dean Mahaffy, Branch Manager of Aunt Millie's in Davison, along with Director of Sales Tim Wildey, visited our Lapeer Road location. They arrived with a truckload of fresh, delicious Italian bread, which was promptly delivered to our warehouse. "We're donating 3,000 loaves of bread to the Food Bank because we enjoy doing it!" said Mahaffy. When asked for additional comment, Tim Wildey chimed in with, "any time we can give back to the community that built us and build them back better we're all about it." This donation will make a significant impact in the fight against hunger across eastern Michigan. Thank you, Aunt Millie’s, for your unwavering support and commitment to our community!

  • This Friday, we will once again be participating in the annual Whatchamacallit event held at Dort Financial Center in Flint, Michigan! Sponsored by Dort Financial Credit Union and the Swartz Creek Area Chamber of Commerce, this networking opportunity unites members of the community in support of breakfast and fundraising. Last year's "Jam the Jar" contest helped us raise an impressive $147 - let's try to double that this year! We extend our gratitude to everyone who makes this event possible. See you Friday! • In the spirit of giving this holiday season, VG's Grocery SpartanNash and Miller Amish Country Poultry are making a significant contribution to help families in need. On Friday, December 6th, VG’s/SpartanNash and Miller Poultry donated 7,200 pounds of premium chicken drumsticks and 3,000 pounds of chicken sausage to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. Chief Development Officer Crystal Travis was on hand to oversee the donation and thank representatives from both VG's and Miller Poultry in person. This gesture underscores VG’s/SpartanNash and Miller Poultry’s commitment to supporting local communities and ensuring that everyone has access to nutritious meals during the festive season. "We appreciate the communities that we do business in" said Jim Cataline, Service Manager and Sales for Miller Poultry. "We've been doing this for going on 18 years and giving back to the communities is part of our core values." That sentiment was echoed by Chris Palmer, Store Director of VG's at Silver Parkway in Fenton, who added "the donation that we've done every year as far back as I can remember is great for the community." The event was highlighted by the very special appearance of Miller Poultry's President, Matthew Craig. Mr. Craig was thrilled to collaborate with the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, VG's and SpartanNash in order to provide food for those in need this holiday season. When asked for comment, he stated that "it's a great opportunity and we're thankful for the partnership." +1
  • The holiday spirit just keeps on giving! Today, LMI Corporation joined us at the Hunger Solution Center and volunteered in the warehouse, packing over 500 holiday boxes! On top of that, they surprised us with a check for $940 which had been raised from a company-wide cookie drive! Thank you so much, everyone; we truly appreciate your kindness. ❤ If YOU would like to volunteer at the Food Bank, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Brooke Summers, at bsummers@fbem.us. We are always looking for additional help but during the holidays that need grows exponentially larger. In a single hour, one person can sort enough food to feed 355 people. Just THINK of the impact you could have! #FeedingEM
