🌍 Microsoft’s new data center design wastes zero water - featuring a closed liquid cooling loop. I saw something similar in Oak Ridge National Laboratory closed liquid cooling for the Summit SuperComputer. Anyway, here’s why this matters: Traditionally, AI operations in data centers consume enormous amounts of energy and water. For every 20–50 ChatGPT queries, nearly a bottle of fresh water is evaporated during cooling: https://lnkd.in/expaA8pc Microsoft’s new design eliminates this problem. Here’s how it works: • Traditional Cooling: Most data centers are air-cooled. Heat from servers is removed by cooling towers, which use water that partially evaporates into the air during cooling. •Microsoft’s Liquid Cooling: Heat from server chips is transferred to a closed-loop water system via direct-to-chip liquid cooling. The heated water is carried to a chiller, where a second refrigerant loop removes the heat. The water stays in the system, eliminating evaporation entirely. What Made This Possible: 1️⃣ Chips were redesigned to operate at higher temperatures. 2️⃣ Direct-to-chip liquid cooling systems were developed to safely manage the process. 3️⃣ AI growth created a critical demand for more efficient cooling technologies. Top 3 things I noticed at Supercomputer 2024 in November: 1. Manufacturers have all launched liquid cooling offerings that help to pack more compute power into smaller spaces. But adoption isn’t easy—standards are unclear, and integrating these systems into existing setups remains a big challenge. 2. Sensors are in almost every piece of data center hardware now. From Power Distribution Units to Liquid Cooling Manifolds. These sensors are driving real-time insights straight into Building Management Systems. 3. There’s a clear divide between Legacy vs. New Builds. Some companies focus on squeezing efficiency out of older facilities with mixed equipment, while others are all-in on designing advanced new builds. Startups have to pick a lane, but bigger players are finding ways to play both sides. So at FLUIX AI, we picked focus as we help legacy data center sites wanting reduce energy costs and introduce higher compute density.
