"𝗢𝗠𝗚, 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗠𝗲!" Making success about “me” — my worth — is an invitation to Leadership Hell that sets the stage for us to suffer, and likely, cause suffering for those around us, too. If we are driven to reach a goal because we think we will impress others enough to be worthy in their eyes, that will generate stress. Why? Because we’ll be placing so much on the line (our self-worth) that we’ll live with an ongoing tension of seeking and needing the approval of others — an ongoing cycle of self-generated pressure. For most of us, this need for approval operates beneath the level of our awareness. It’s not like we’re walking around strategizing, “How can I get approval today.” It may be subtle, but it’s there if you dare to look. When we make the quality and success of our work about our self-worth, every misstep becomes magnified way out of proportion and perceived as carrying great consequence. That’s a lot of unnecessary pressure to place on ourselves. Making other people’s opinions a measure of our self-worth is a fool’s errand, anyway, because even if we do succeed, there’s no guarantee that anyone will notice or give us the recognition we want. A better approach is liberation from making everyone else our appointed judge and jury. Lighten up. Most people who have earnestly looked into this part of themselves have laughed so hard when they realized how much they’ve tortured themselves over the years.
