🇨🇭🖋️📚🎓ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship Testimonial: Raj Jayant - from New York University to USI Universit della Svizzera italiana - Decentralized/Distributed Systems A Very Swiss Summer: Whenever I was asked what country I would like to travel to if given a chance, I always said Switzerland. I had never been there before! Then, during the summer of 2023, I had the opportunity to pursue research work at USI Universit della Svizzera italiana, popularly called the University of Lugano outside Europe. It is the only Italian-speaking university in Switzerland. I was close to choosing to go to Lugano for my masters. This was my chance to experience the country and the city! I worked in data structures and concurrency, a field of computer science. I had no previous research experience or any idea about the second topic before starting my internship and wasn’t a computer science major in college. So, it became a fun adventure: I spent a lot of time getting up to speed and learning the required background material. I came to understand how computer science research is done. I made friends with other doctoral students in the field. I learned how to work completely independently, which, after all, is what independent research is all about - seeing what research problems there are in an area, learning to decide which one to tackle, understanding how to break it up into smaller pieces, then trying your best! I learned a lot in my few weeks there. It was a transformative learning experience to immerse myself in a world where English would be of only limited help. The customs were different, the way things were done was different (both from Italy and from other cantons of Switzerland, I heard). Even the trash bags and the rules for how to dispose of it were apparently unique to the canton of Ticino. It took me a few weeks to grasp how to navigate it as someone used to living in a city as big as New York City. I grew up in a city surrounded by hills before moving away for college. Being in Lugano for the summer let me experience that (so many green hills!) once again. I loved strolling down to the lab building every day, taking different routes and looking at the Swiss-Italian architecture along the way. I traveled to a few other cities in Ticino. Every place I visited was out of a movie. Ascona’s lakefront was particularly memorable! I am a history buff, so I also took a small detour to Rome, Italy. I learned from my Italian colleague that the way I used to make pasta was incorrect. My pasta-making skills have considerably improved! Oh, and I learned a few words of Italian too! A big thanks to my supervisor, Dr Fernando Pedone at the Computer Systems Institute at USI Lugano, for giving me a chance to work on something I had little background in. The topic of work here ended up helping me get my next internship in a similar topic back home. 🇨🇭🖋️📚🎓Find out more about the ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship: https://lnkd.in/eZMcCnDF

What’s ahead in US foreign economic and #trade policy? A delegation from the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs visited Washington, D.C. to compare notes with policymakers, Hill staffers as well as think-tank and private-sector representatives on the upcoming transition to the second administration of President #Trump. 🏛️ Hervé Lohr, Deputy Head of Bilateral Economic Relations, and his deputy Johannes Rühl gauged the trade and economic policy aims of the incoming administration. In meetings, including with Mayur Patel (Chief Trade Counsel at the Senate Finance Committee) and Matt Siordia (Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for the UK and Europe, USTR), they highlighted Switzerland’s longstanding trade relations with the US, as well as Switzerland’s role as one of the largest foreign direct investors in the US with a strong footprint in manufacturing. 👷 For some of the meetings, the delegation was joined by Rahul Sahgal, CEO of the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce, evidence of the tight collaboration between government and the private sector. 🤝 Underlining Switzerland’s strong footprint in innovation and public health, Ambassador Ralf Heckner hosted a panel discussion on “Resilient International Medical Supply Chains”. In the capable hands of moderator Clete Willems, panelists Julia Nielson, Dr. Chad Bown, and Leo A. Farber debated policies to safeguard fragile supply chains and presented their ideas for enhanced international collaboration among like-minded countries. 💉 Switzerland remains committed to fostering #innovation and strengthening workforce development, thus maintaining and strengthening its mutually beneficial economic partnership with the United States. 🇨🇭🤝🇺🇸
