Advancing policies and practices to dismantle the racial and economic barriers embedded in the American education system
About us
EdTrust promotes high academic achievement for all students at all levels—pre-kindergarten through college. Our goal is to close the gaps in opportunity and achievement that consign far too many young people—especially those from low-income families or who are Black, Latino, or American Indian—to lives on the margins of the American mainstream. Although many organizations speak up for the adults employed by schools and colleges, we speak up for students, especially those whose needs and potential are often overlooked. We evaluate every policy, every practice, and every dollar spent through a single lens: what is right for students. We work alongside educators, parents, students, policymakers, and civic and business leaders in communities across the country, providing practical assistance in their efforts to transform schools and colleges into institutions that serve all students well. We analyze local, state, and national data and use what we learn to help build broader understanding of achievement and opportunity gaps and the actions necessary to close them. We participate actively in national and state policy debates, bringing lessons learned from on-the-ground work and from unflinching data analyses to build the case for policies that will help all students and schools reach high levels of achievement. Our Core Beliefs: We believe in the power of education to close the gaps that separate low-income students and students of color from other young Americans. We believe that schools and colleges, appropriately organized, can help virtually all students master the knowledge they need to succeed. We believe long-standing gaps in opportunity, achievement, and attainment have roots inside and outside of schools. And though we know these gaps are stubborn, we also know they are not inevitable. We believe a strong education improves the lives of young people, is vital to sustaining our democracy, and strengthens America.

When it comes to teacher diversity, it’s important to know where we've been and where we're going. The National Council on Teacher Quality’s (NCTQ) new dashboard acts as a rearview mirror showing trends in teacher diversity over time and a roadmap showing which prep programs are leading toward a more diverse workforce. https://lnkd.in/guJKh-sc

🌟Through-year assessments, new innovative state tests that measure student learning over the course of the year—provide an opportunity to address some of the key pain points with current statewide summative assessments and advance data-driven decision-making designed to address inequities in student learning opportunities. Involving smaller, more frequent tests throughout the year, these assessments offer quicker, more meaningful data that helps educators identify strengths and areas for improvement early. These assessments aim to provide more timely, relevant, and actionable data for educators, parents, and administrators and can help provide additional supports for underserved students that are better aligned to meet their needs throughout the academic year. In spring and summer 2025, the Emmy Award-winning nonprofit Roadtrip Nation will feature three formerly incarcerated individuals in a documentary on postsecondary education in prison. By interviewing inspiring people who participated in education programs during their time in prison, these roadtrippers will learn how others navigated their paths during and after incarceration. This documentary will show how postsecondary education in prison has changed the course of people’s lives as part of a larger conversation about what’s possible for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals. Applications are now open to join the road trip and share your story while being exposed to new paths and possibilities for your future. Applications are open through February 2, 2025. The president-elect has nominated Linda McMahon as the next Secretary of Education. EdTrust is watching closely. We need a Secretary who will prioritize strengthening & protecting public schools to ensure all students, especially the most underserved, receive a high-quality, inclusive education. Proposals like those in Project 2025—dismantling the Dept. of Education, cutting federal oversight, and diverting public funds to private schools—threaten to widen inequities and harm public education. Public schools are the backbone of opportunity for millions of students. Federal leadership must focus on equity, quality, and access—not dismantling systems that underserved communities rely on. #ProtectPublicEducation #EdEquity EdTrust will be fiercely advocating for an education leader who puts students first. Stay tuned as we continue to monitor this crucial nomination. Learn More: https://edtru.st/47K4Bhn
